SIAP-

Completely changing his lifestyle for an extra $7 an hour, which isn't life changing money, it's understandable why he'd balk. He's probably coasting at his regular job, isn't interested in climbing a corporate ladder, just wants to pay his bills and enjoy himself until he's eligible for SS. I have a friend like this, an extremely intelligent person, but that's the life he wants. He doesn't even smoke weed, he just doesn't want a life where extra money = extra responsibility/stress etc. He's in his sweet spot and happy as a clam.

Nicotine? Heroin? Alcohol? As someone who is a doc this is a pretty silly take.

He's not wrong in terms of the addiction part. It's still stimulating the pleasure centers of the brain that we believe contribute to the desire to want more of it. But you could also argue that food is addictive in that logic.

The distinct difference between THC and other drugs (even caffeine) is it's mild withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal from even alcohol can kill you. THC will not. And the withdrawal period is shorter and milder than pretty much any drug its in the same schedule with.

bullshite, nobody is addicted to pot! They just really really like it! Yes to the tune of giving up a job. Have a daughter who loves pot and will not ever take a job that tests for it. Does not drink a drop but will not give her ganga for nothing!

Agreed. Weed smokers also react to opioids and pain killers the same way a very heavy drinker does. They have a built up tolerance. A standard dose of painkillers is ineffective for pot smokers. They have to take much more to achieve the same effects as a standard p

I was getting herb from a guy at one point who was also providing herbs for a pediatric oncologist. Not sure if it was for her or she was making edibles/tinctures for the kids or their parents. Didn't. Ask I only met her in passing. Wasn't any of my business.

Lifestyle choice. Is it that hard of a concept that someone enjoys a different lifestyle?

Never understood the allure of weed, or any other drug, for that matter. Must suck to need something "extra" to make you feel good.

Giving up a job to do a drug is the very definition of addiction.

Addicts, feel free to downvote.

shite I never really had an issue quitting pot whenever I needed to. Might be hard to fall asleep for a few days or whatever, and you kind of just crave the feeling of being high, but it’s nothing terrible, or nothing that’s hard to get over. Getting over nicotine though is a completely different animal. Feeling pissed off all the time, not being hungry, and stuff like that. I guess everyone is different though.

It most certainly is. It’s also a depressant.

None of that really speaks to "more addictive".

Oh I know. It was just a personal anecdote with my experiences with the two.

quote:

When you say you've "quit weed"...how much are you smoking?

The first time was towards the end of college when I was job searching. I had smoked pretty much everyday since I was 15 then, so pretty heavy user for 7 or so years. The other times I was a much lighter user, but still pretty regularly. While not everyday, definitely multiple times a week, and during football season all damn day on Saturday and Sundays. Those times a 1/4 oz would last me 2-3 weeks.

ETA: Oh, nevermind. I just got your joke after I responded. Yeah, I should have put "quit" in quotes. I'll never fully quit weed.

He didn't give up a job to do drugs. He just didn't take a new one. Maybe the guy likes his fricking job and his life. Not everyone is out constantly chasing a higher paying gig.

You can find plenty of research articles online on weed smokers and their built up tolerance they have with pain killers, sedatives, etc.

quote:

Regular users of marijuana generally need larger doses of anesthesia medicines in order to achieve the same degree of sedation. If you don’t tell your anesthesiologist how much marijuana you smoke, he or she may underestimate how much anesthesia will be needed for you to "go to sleep"

quote:

marijuana use appears to lower the pain threshold in surgical patients with acute pain, resulting in increased pain medication requirements. In some cases, high-dose cannabinoid use is associated with increased postopera- tive pain, additional doses of analgesia medications, and higher pain scores in the immediate postoperative period compared with nonusers. A case report described a patient with a history of long-term cannabis use who required nearly double the opioid dose of an average patient of the same body weight and height in the first 24 hours postoperatively. In a systematic review of the literature on the efficacy of cannabis in the management of acute pain, Stevens and Higgins46 concluded that can- nabis was ineffective in the management of acute pain.
