I’ve been in the area a little over 20 years. It’s not bad at all. I wouldn’t recommend living in any of the local towns proper though. Several good rural areas to choose from.

Pros:
Quiet
Easy access to the water
Close to the city but far enough away to not deal with Baton Rouge bullshite
More affordable than St Francisville and Zachary
Low property taxes

Cons:
Commuting to Baton Rouge sucks
Commuting home from Baton Rouge really sucks
Shitty public schools and subpar private options
Typical small town drama

ETA- if they get their shite together with the schools it has the potential to blow up. Whether that’s good or bad depends on you.

LOL, so true, but probably true of most small towns. NRs does have its share of “blue bloods”

Since this turned into an Opelousas thread from the jump somehow, I work here, it's bad. But it's not the pinnacle of thugness/trash. Maybe the "city" version though with 20k people. Thing is if you go right outside the city in either direction it's not too bad. (Eunice is decent I know I'm going to get flamed for that, Cankton, Leonville, Arnauldville (decennt brewery), Washington, Sunset, etc)

Yea the area is nothing special obviously but there is some special culture.

As for New Rhodes, my grandpa is from there. It's okay and not so bad as well. False river is great and you have a nice little lake town with some cool history, right outside of BR.

Pointe Coupee has terrible public schools. Livonia used to be a good school but now it’s a holy terror since they closed Central PC and combined all high schools into one at Livonia.

This is the biggest problem here. There is little crime. Housing is not high at all. Not much to do unless one likes the outdoors. It's a quite place. People do take the time to meet their neighbors and help each other.

I live just outside the city limits.

I moved up here 42 years ago from New Orleans. Best thing I ever did. Besides, I have family that lives here.

If you notice in this thread the only real negatives being mentioned are having to drive to the city, BR, for most of what you need, which is the way it is in every small town in America, and that the schools suck. It's also mentioned a lot that housing is cheaper and property taxes are cheaper than neighboring towns like st. Francisville and Zachary, but those towns have excellent schools. You can't have it both ways. Either you pay cheap property taxes and keep shitty schools, or you pay up like neighboring towns and have better schools. Granted, we've had a less than stellar school board in the past, to put it mildly, but most of all of the board members have been voted out and I'm trying to be optimistic that the current administration turns things around. The hurdle is that the school board has sucked for so long that the residents are super hesitant to vote for an increase in property taxes, which I believe is the same millage it's been since 1978. Our property values would increase if we invested in better schools but there's so much old family land here that'll never be sold that most don't care if their property values increase because they'll never sell their property anyway.

Yep, I fall under that. Had even bought more.

As far as having to drive to BR, I just drive over to Zachary for what I need. It's only like 18 miles away. Can't stand to go to BR for anything.

outside of clothing, sporting goods, and maybe a movie theater what do you need that you can't get in NR? Its got enough retailers to get what you need in most situations. If you need a suit or a set of golf clubs, yeah, you gotta go to BR. But it aint like you're on an island where you have no resources.

Besides, people act like driving to BR is going cross country by oxcart. Its just not that big of a deal. Especially if you work there on weekdays. you get the things you need from BR while in BR. The rest you get at local retailers. Sheeze.

Didn't mean to compare NR to Op. I know how bad Op is, was just using that as a benchmark for trashy.

Main thing we drive to br for is medical visits. My son sees 3 specialist that aren't found in NR. Also the occasional Sam's or Costco trip but that's only like once a month. And yes, driving to br can feel like driving cross country. Lol. Sometimes I feel like I could've driven to Houston by the time I make it to bluebonnet when the bridge is backed up. Lol

Does that happen on the "old" bridge a lot too? It seems like, more often than not, that would be your best bet in coming from over there.

I take the old bridge a lot. I've learned to GPS my trip as I'm leaving the house to see which bridge to take.

New Roads doesn’t want to turn into Zachary or Prarieville. They are perfectly content where they are.

If you move there, you’d better like it now. It’s not likely to change very much in the next 30 years.

I just cross the bridge here and take 61 to BR. A couple miles longer, but less traffic.

The STEM school in PC is the greatest thing they’ve gotten and it’s their crown jewel school now. They even got a lotto system in place now to admit kids.

Fontaine Lumber is better than HD. You gotta pay for service and quality.

Fontaine has good stuff and the service is great. Problem is for those that have camps (or houses they use as camps) and are only out there during the weekends, the weekend hours aren’t good when you have needs come up.

We definitely have to plan ahead on projects
