I lived my first 30 years in nola, and no, it has nothing to do with being older.
I've been in the Quarter about 8 times during the last 12 months. I've felt concern about what I saw on two occasions.

Right? the fried shrimp at Hard Rock were awful, I'm posting on Yelp.

I don't know what's worse, the folk who act like every NOLA trip is a sentence to rape and murder or the New Orleans folk who pretend like the city isn't dangerous and seek to belittle anyone who wants to speak the truth.

It was already shite back when I left that terrible city in 2008

So you did it when you were younger too?

What happened? And were you perhaps just being paranoid?

Probably the people who don't live in NOLA but run in every thread to tell us how dangerous it is.

The worst is ignorant jerkoffs like you that belittle the city at every mention, thus necessitating people to defend it. If you idiots would STFU every once in a while, the defenders wouldn't need to constantly be defending. But since you continually need to piss and moan, it will never stop.

I used to go to the Quarter almost every weekend during the 1990's and rarely heard of a problem. The record murders were amongst those in the drug trade. Now, it spills over more often to the tourist areas. When I'm in the Quarter now, I am far more vigilant about my surroundings and who is walking within a block or so of me.
That may be true of a few areas in the quarter. It def became more of a thug hangout after Katrina when other bars didn't come back.
But, most other neighborhoods are significantly safer today that they were in the 90s.

It's hard to say it's going to shite when it's improving in most every metric. It's still below average in a lot of those aspects (excluding food, music, attractions, etc), but it's nonetheless projecting upwards, even if gradually. The thing about the crime is murders are down, but the individual stories are getting more egregious.

My SO lives in NOLA and had an attempted break in while she was out of town this weekend. While her roommates were sleeping someone opened the door but ran when they realized the chain was hooked and the alarm was going off. I'm there 2-3 weekends a month and see "troublemakers" eying cars and porches on a regular basis. It's certainly not a war zone in all parts of the city but it is necessary to feel on guard all the time as property crime is rampant.

The haters aren't interested in upward trends. NOLA either is Austin or it isn't already. No one cares if anything resembling progress is made.

They both suck, but you don't see people starting threads about how great NO is regularly. You constantly get threads like this here by people who have no skin in the game. Anyone who cares about Louisiana should be pissed with the crime.

Exactly. A strong New Orleans is a great thing for the state.

Don't even pretend that you advocate for such a thing.

Near Martin's Wine Cellar. Not a great part of town but pretty gentrified near the house.

that's pretty close to central city. That little corridor is coming along nicely but still close to trouble. That's a problem with New Orleans...you have places like Commander's Palace within walking distance of the hood.

The whole state is going to shite.
New Orleans stopped being the vital economic engine the state needed when the big energy HQ's left for Houston. Tourism just doesn't provide the needed white collar job growth that New Orleans used to have. It's been surpassed by Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and even Memphis in that respect.
Locals cite rising home prices as a sign of recovery. From what? Katrina? Even the day before Katrina, New Orleans was a shell of what it used to be and what it should be. It should be a major economic power for the entire south....but all signs point to its future looking more like Charleston or Savannah.
New Orleans is a "has-been" in a state full of cities that "never were". Louisiana needs to get its act together.
