So I live in Lafayette and make the commute to downtown Baton Rouge every day for work and it takes me exactly an hour each way. Why I do this, you ask? I am from Lafayette and refuse to live in Baton Rouge again (or any place else for that matter). Plain and simple. Unfortunately, there is no work in Lafayette or any surrounding areas for the position I am in. When the conversation of where I live comes up with people that I meet through work, I get looked at like I am from another planet. Never fails. I put about 40k miles on my truck a year with work, traveling around to my camps to hunt/fish, etc.

Am I out of my mind or is this a normal commute to work for most? Just thought I’d see what you baws had to say.

If it doesn't bother you then who cares.

Although I would get an apartment in BR so I didn't have to drive every day. Easier and cheaper I would think.

Does your chauffeur mind the commute?

If not, where is the problem?

Are those two hours a day you drive worth it? Would you rather have 2 extra hours a day to spend with your family? Something to think about

I worked with 2 guys at my last job that commuted from Laffy to BR. I wouldn't do it but to each their own. I don't even want to live in the BR burbs due to the traffic. I live about 4 miles from my office

Even if you hate Baton Rouge and love Lafayette, that sounds miserable to me.

My commute is that long too. It's worth it for the money I make and I refuse to live south of lake Pontchartrain.

Your commute takes less time than to read your Great Wall O’Text.

Well, that’s your answer right there.

If this is non-negotiable for you, then literally your commute isn’t long.

2 hours X 5 days a week
x 52 weeks a year
= 520 hours
divided by 40 hours per work week
= 13 40 hour weeks just commuting

You are spending literally 13 work weeks a year just commuting, with no additional pay.

Stated another way,you are spending 3 months worth of 40 hour work weeks a year driving with no additional pay.

Unreasonable.

I see what you are getting at with saving on gas and wear and tear on my truck by getting an apt but I’d rather not be living in 2 different places. Plus, I believe paying rent is the equivalent of setting my money on fire.

I’d rather just buy another place in BR and rent it out.

I made that commute every day for 2 years. Never had a complaint, save for the occasional bad traffic day.

Now, I commute from Denham to nearly downtown and it takes me an average 15 minutes longer than when I was commuting from Lafayette. Can’t stand BR traffic.

Edit: additionally, highway miles > stop and go traffic in terms of vehicle wear.

I commute an hour each way from a suburb of Orlando to a rather rural location. It’s an easy drive that I’ve adjusted to. I also drive a pickup truck. The only part I dislike is going through two tanks of gas each week. Considering buying a commuter car.

I get a truck allowance every month that covers that.

You should move to Zachary. That's a much better commute to downtown

I don’t blame you. I worked in NOLA before moving back home and the only place I would agree to live was the Northshore.
