On one hand the people who pay attention succeed, on the other, it doesn’t matter...you just got the right ticket.

Nature or Nurture?

Why not both? Those who pay attention have a better chance of success, but not all become successful. On the other hand, some who do not have as much of a chance of success luck into it.

Not saying that self made millionaires don't exist....they certainly do.

But for every one of them there are 9999 others who tried just as hard and didn't make it and 990,001 who had the talent/idea but no opportunity.

We have had a few decades where the middle class grew stronger but the oligarchs have worked to make sure to reverse that. In the last 35 years the wealth of the top 0.01% has increased 3000 times. The middle class are at their lowest since before WWII

You want to succeed you create your own opportunity. I started my business from nothing.

The middle class prior to WWII lived in stark poverty when compared to the standard of living of the middle class today.

Success occurs at this intersection:

It’s up to the individual to get there.

Some of both.

You can be a total moron but inherit enough so it doesn't matter at all. And you can be above average but are born into a situation that you have a hard time succeeding.

Then again, sometimes people starting out with nothing can make it big. Rare and the person has to be truly exceptional in one or more ways, but it can happen.

I believe you can create your own luck. Working hard and smart increases your chance of success and also creates your chance of good luck.
