It was done when Ford bought it back in the day.

The beginning of the end was when Ford bought them and began selling Ford Taurus cars branded as a Jag.

I thought Ford had Jaguar on the right track. Jaguar reliability was then the best it had ever been.

Perhaps, but the soul of thr brand was lost when it was sold. Just my humble opinion.

one of my best friends owned a 1957 XK140 Drophead Coupe in the ‘80s, looked kinda like this one:

he owned it for about 5 years and as i recall he may have put 100 miles on it over that period, the rest of the time it was undrivable

The irony of Jaguar admitting electrical issues are the downfall of the brand... Wow.

Did anyone else read this in a British accent in their head?

There was a shitty movie back in the day called "I.Q.", with Tim Robbins. Robbins' character is a mechanic, and some of his dialogue was mocking British cars:

"You see, you have a Lucas type four generator on a 12-volt system, and you know the British. They'd rather spend time gluing wood on a dashboard than getting the electrical system right."

Then there is the bumper sticker, "Why do the English drink warm beer? Because Lucas makes their fridges"
