Is it wrong to judge someone in the grave?

Quick story here:
I knew this guy about 15 years ago. One morning I noticed him limping a little and I ask if his leg is okay. He replies, "Yeah, just an old college football injury acting up."
I say, "Wow, I never knew you played in college." (I knew he went to LSU)
He says, "Yep, that play ended my football career my junior year. Never played another snap."
Fast forward to recently and the guy passes away. I go to the funeral and start talking to his college room mate. I bring up the injury and the room mate says, "Yeah, I remember that day. We were playing Sigma Nu and he got his knee wrenched something terrible. He was on crutches for a couple of weeks."
Shocked, I don't reveal any of the story that I was led to believe and just leave it at that.
Now it's starting to bother me. I think I gave him more respect in general because I thought he played for LSU and it turns out he was obviously misleading me. frick that guy.
Am I wrong here?

He didn't really lie. You just assumed. And we all know what happens when you assume...

It's not wrong but it is useless.

He said college football, you assumed he was a d1 athlete that played for the Tigers

I have scars all over, and when people ask about them, I tell them it's from fighting so they think I'm a badass
What I don't tell them is that they came from getting shitwhipped by my neighbors cat
Two sides to every story

That's a very valid point, but the way the original conversation went he obviously knew what I was thinking because I asked what years he played, position, etc.
I wouldn't have given a shite about frat football.

Hell no. We should be brutally honest about the dead.
There is a concept in an Orson Scott Card book that Scruffy enjoys.
A Speaker for the Dead tells the story in all truth, holding back neither good nor bad, so that the deceased may be better understood.

I don't think the dead care as much as the living

Big time, and I cut him slack for it thinking he played for the tigers.
That's what really bothers me.

I hear you but he does not have the opportunity to speak about it now, so forget about it.
