re: Is it wrong to judge someone in the grave?

There's a line in a song that says, "telling lies that we rehearsed about the girls we made out with and how bad arse we were."
Dude probably told that story so many times that he believed that he played college football.

Yeah, I remember that day. We were playing Sigma Nu and he got his knee wrenched something terrible. He was on crutches for a couple of weeks."
So he was in college and playing football? He never said he played for LSU...

I think I gave him more respect in general because I thought he played for LSU and it turns out he was obviously misleading me
If you give more respect to people based on if they played football at LSU or not then you are a bad judge of character. There have been a bunch of really terrible people play at any university... just because they were a good athlete doesn't mean you should respect them any more... and if they didn't play football, they shouldn't be respected any less. Judge people based on merit and how they are today, not how they used to be or what they never were. It will normally work out better for you.

Yes, if you are telling a story about frat football, the years are irrelevant and there are only 2 positions, quarterback and receivers. Maybe 3 positions if you have a guy in the backfield.
He told me he was a lineman.

Perhaps he was the defender who rushed the QB.

You knew the guy, and knew he went to LSU, but when he said he "played in college" you didn't bother taking 5 seconds to look him up online? You weren't even remotely curious if he lettered, or registered any stats, or played in any games?

Ever heard of a couple fellas by the names of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington? How about George Custer and Benedict Arnold?

I hear you, but as a fan I think most people would think it was cool to know someone who played for your favorite team. As a result, you'd probably cut them more slack. Respect wasn't the right word, more like lack of scrutiny.
That's a pretty tall tale, to risk getting busted out on. Kudos to him though I guess, he died before I figured it out.

yes...you are giving too many fricks about something very insignificant.
They say living well is the best revenge.
He's living on the wrong side of dirt now...you can't help but live better than him. Let it go.

Sounds like he was making a bad joke and you just assumed. Here are two I use:
I played football at LSU. It was a game between Army and Air Force ROTC on the parade grounds, but I still played football at LSU. Also, my wife (no pics) sprained her ankle at the 2000 Olympics. It was in the parking lot outside of the stadium, but she still sprained her ankle at the Olympics.

That's a good question. I said 15 years ago, but this may have been in the late 90's when he hold the story. By the time google and wikipedia came around I never thought to check. I had already been believing it a few years.

I know a dude who claims his knee injury was due to combat in Afghanistan... some people might not know he busted his knee doing laundry. People assume and he doesn't tell.

meh.. i guess i'm with you, but i guess there was no way he spoke wrong or you misheard it? Maybe he was gonna walkon on something and the fratball injury ended it for him? but i', still with you...

I guess I see what you are saying, but I just haven't ever felt that way. I guess it is because I grew up with some guys who have played football at various colleges, and baseball, and even one soccer player... some of them at LSU. Maybe it is because I saw them do the same stupid shite in HS or maybe it is because I played some college baseball and realized that we were just the same drunken, stupid, college kids (albeit with much better access to cleat chasers). I just don't personally see them any different. Great athletes? Sure! Better people? Most of them. Beyond scrutiny? Hell no... more scrutinized even.

Oh yeah, that's another part of the story that he misled.
I asked what years he played and he told me "Late 50's"
I said, "Were you on the national championship team?"
He said, "No, that was the next year after my injury."
Again, technically he is not lying, but some clarification would have sure helped.

I know a similar one. His knee injury while serving in Afghanistan was the result of tearing his ACL playing volleyball. He goes to all the wounded warrior events.
