The economy of individuals, and their view of current economic conditions, is directly related to their personal decision making. If you buy more house, car and "stuff" than you can afford, and far too many people do so, you are going to have a different opinion about the economy than you will if you live within your means. Our neighborhood is almost exclusively mid 30 somethings with kids. Average home size is about 4000 square feet, about 4 - 5 people per family. Every driveway has 2 $40 cars in it, at a minimum, most of them have a boat and a RV and they are constantly looking for someone to look after 2-3 dogs while they are on vacations. Every garage, most of them "3" car garages, according to the builder, are stacked floor to ceiling and wall to wall with "stuff". When we all get together at a community event the complaining about being broke is universal. They do this complaining while consuming massive amounts of alcohol. They have all manner of people and institutions which are responsible for their financial worries but I have yet to hear one say "we should have bought a smaller house". These are young to slightly older than young families, mid career so not at the height of their earnings if they stay the course, and they are neck deep in debt of their own making and worried about money. They are not doing anything that hasn't been done in the past, living beyond your means is what the American Dream has been for a long time....but they are doing it to themselves.

Unfortunately there is nothing that prevents people from making bad decisions and living their lives in debt.

Social media ie facebook and instagram play a role this "flex" culture to show off the material items. In reality all one has is a good amount of debt and shallow "friends".

There's a 19 year old welder in one of our shops who lives with his parents and is paycheck to paycheck. He's making at least $35 an hour and gets 15-20 hours of OT a week. He has a brand new f250, bass boat, and SxS. He's constantly complaining that he will never be able to afford his own place. How the frick do people live like that? He's making more than 99% of people his age but instead of setting himself up well he's pissing it away.

Half of this board, probably more really, owns 60k+ pickup trucks that get shitty gas mileage that they use for no other reason than to drive from home to work everyday. Yet nearly everyone of them will tell you that they absolutely need that lifted F250 for the nine times a year they have to drive on the gravel road to hunting camp so they can shoot a deer under a corn feeder from a heated stand with wifi.

He is making more than most people mid-career. Also making the same mistakes. He is not unique, most of us learn the hard way to live within our means or never learn to do so.

Yep, cars are older now than previous years, it seems. People hanging on over the past few years.

A lot of this board is also not nearly as financially secure as it would lead you to believe.

[quote]You may not realize it, but you are saying "I perpetually rent a vehicle for several hundred dollars a month, and I never actually own one."[/
Not really. I will go years without a payment and save that money earning 5% for now. I will keep this one until I get tired of it then go buy a new one.
If you rent you don’t own anything. If I wanted to or needed cash I could sell my truck and have a good amount of money.
I’ve leased 1 truck before and I’ll never do it again.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer can go for up to $125k - it wasn't that long ago when that was the price of a starter house.

I love my Camry. Just took it on a ~1,000 mile road trip and only had to visit a gas station 2 times.

I paid $87K for my first house (1500 sq ft) in 1997.

That's almost exactly what we paid for our starter house in 2005. It's was the definition of a starter house though - 1400 sq ft with vinyl siding for a family of 4.

People are just squishy dopamine robots. Once you realize that the majority of people are just dopamine addicts and how to manipulate them, you can make a fortune selling the drug that their own bodies make.

Kid’s 19. His brain won’t be finished cooking for another six years. I blame his parents.

I'd have probably been a moron with money at that age if I'd have had any. His parents need to tell him to sell some of that shite and get his own apartment.

This. And anyone with a pulse can get lenders to extend more credit than they should take on.
I’m sure some of those folks driving $90K vehicles with 84 month notes are and will be OK, but a lot of them financially kneecapped themselves.

My wife and I bought a little house in Baker for $63K in 2003 right out of college. Our first house…and definitely below the median.
Today, nobody can buy a house below the median because that’s just unacceptable.

Covid aside, we haven't had a prolonged economic downturn in the past 15-16 years. When we do it will get ugly for a lot of people.
