Is it really necessary to close interstates 10 and 12 from Lafayette to Slidell?

Just got to Baton Rouge after driving from Houston. My bad for not checking the road closures, but since it went up to the 40's today I didn't really expect anything to still be closed. I was a bit surprised when I got to Lafayette and was forced to exit. I would have thought a road side sign would have warned me earlier, like those large emergency ones in Lake Charles. It wasn't too difficult to get here because I just took 190 instead. I don't really understand though how the 190 bridge over the Mississippi can be open and it looks like even the Lake Pontchartrain bridge is open, but all the interstates in Baton Rouge and New Orleans and everywhere in between are closed? I felt bad for all the miles of tractor trailer truck drivers I passed stopped on the sides of the highway.

Edit -

Just looked at the photos. Those do look pretty bad. I was in Houston the last couple of days where there were the same conditions. The interstates were clear by the afternoon today, but looks like it was slightly warmer there. When I checked in the hotel here this evening, the guy at the front desk was complaining about the shutdowns, so I assumed it was overkill based on how clear 190 was on the way in. I spoke too soon it looks like.

You mean 34 for an hour or two for a stretch of interstate that is like 50% raised highways?

The highest it got was 34 and it wasn't that long. There is still ice on the interstate. If they would not shut it down, there would be a ton of wrecks.

Maybe the state should leave all of those highways open and then everyone can come here and complain about the black ice and accidents that would be widespread.

But DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson told WBRZ-TV that it typically requires five-to-six hours of sunshine and temperatures above freezing to thaw ice on roads

We didn't have that today.

Photos of the interstates this morning. It didn't get above freezing until one or two o'clock.

There was still ice on some of the surface streets at 4:30 when I ran out for a bit

I don't doubt that some stretches are icy and should have been closed, my question is was it necessary to close the entire stretch. The multiple overpasses and main bridge on 190 were fine. Was there not any stretches that could have remained open? With the mess it was creating for so many people, I was just surprised such an extreme measure was taken.

If you had driven on I-10 between Laf and BR you would have lived up to your screen name.

Speed limit is higher on I-10. It's more real estate to actually manage too. I also think they try to treat 190 as a result.

How exactly do you propose bypassing the Atchafalaya Basin bridge? Air boat?

So you want them to only shut down the areas there doesn't have ice? Do you think that makes much sense? "Here is the latest interstate opening update. Starting 4 miles east of Lafayette, westbound I10 is open for a 1.5 mile stretch. 2.5 miles east of that, both sides are open for 3 miles then westbound closes while eastbound stays open for another half mile"

Also, closing the interstate at Lafayette does you a favor. Getting to Breaux Bridge to find out it is closed wouldn't be fun.

DOTD isn’t equipped as, say, a northern DOT with snow plows and enough salt rigs. But that is fine because it’s a rare occurrence. That said, there have been times a salted road refreezes and it worse than before.

They do it to protect people. Chill.

Plus the manpower/police cars it takes to block the interstates at every closure when I'm sure they're needed elsewhere.

I70 closes in Colorado because of rock slides or during snow storms over Vail and Loveland passes. The only detour is to go north and hook up with I80. It's close to a 5 hour detour. People that are stuck on I70 sleep in their cars sometimes. Stop being a little bitch.
