Is it common to pay shipping on bikes from a bike shop?

My wife just bought a bike from local bike shop here and got charged an extra $50 for shipping. I called and they said they charge shipping on every bike they sell. (Which I'm fairly certain they don't charge shipping on in-stock items).

Granted, they had to order it cause they're sold out of pretty much their entire stock, but I still feel like I'm getting ripped off here. Is this common practice?

They gave your wife a price and she agreed to pay it.

Would this shipping make the price higher than you’d expect to pay for a comparable bike received in a comparable manner?

It’s dumb, but usually you can bypass this by ordering it yourself and having it delivered to the same bike shop. Not sure why it’s this way.

If that's code for being ripped off, I'm pretty sure you're right.

I want to support the local shops, (not that bike shops are hurting right now, every one in town is getting tons of business) but I also don't want to get ripped off.

If this is common practice I'm fine with it. Just seemed kind of odd to me.

Most all decent bike brands do not sell (new models) online and want people to keep frequenting their LBS.

If you feel like you're getting ripped off, go buy from Walmart. See how well that treats you.

Pay the fee. Patronize your local bike shop. If you are more than a couple times a year rider, the investment you put in with your LBS will be well worth it.

EDIT - I see that you said you're just curious about the fee. I'm not sure, as I usually buy refurbished bikes, but I'd imagine if it was out of stock they are going to need to get it shipped there. Seems standard.

Is Nick Doobs a real cool guy? Hopefully he's not the twink from Dance Moms as Google indicates.

You could have just ridden the bike home like she rode the guy that sold it to her.

Did you specifically ask beforehand what the total cost would be?

If not, $50 is not an inordinate amount and is justifiable as to shipping a bike.

PS: Pics of your wife to see if for $50.00 I can make you whole.

Worked at a shop from high school all the way through grad school.

Is she asking for rush delivery? If it's out of stock and its an individual shipment, you're still getting a solid rate.

Retail bike shipment costs $100-$150 depending on the miles and packing etc.

You could probably push for them to waive the shipment but honestly, probably a good thing to let them keep that if you can afford it or just ask for them to include a free initial 3 month tune up if they don't already. That's a solid $100 value if your wife puts in some decent time in the first 90 days. Cables stretch, chain breaks in etc.

If it's one of the bigger chain stores, tell them to F off and refund that $50. Work something out if its a true local bike shop.

Being reasonable and generous to those guys goes a LONG WAY if you're serious about riding and getting good service. Trust me on that one.

It's not a rush delivery. This store is pretty much sold out of all their inventory so it seems like they would be making a bulk order to restock.

It's really not that big a deal, just seemed odd. I'm over it. I'm getting the bike for the same price I would've paid if I ordered it off the manufacturer's site, and it's coming assembled so I'm cool with it.
