Is Delta Downs still open? That was the most corrupt track around
I am pretty sure it is, but I have never been there.
I don't know how true this is, but an old boss of mine told me that he and his wife had gone to the track in Lafayette. It was the last race of the night and it was kind of rainy and pretty foggy. He said you couldn't see the horses for most of the race.
The horse that won came in a lot quicker than the rest of the horses.. Supposedly there were people claiming they saw the horse cut through the grass and get back on the track. Like I said, I don't know how true that is, but I do know it was a bad track, a lot of horses use to get hurt there.

The story is true but it didn't happen at Evangeline Downs, it happened at Delta Downs on January 11, 1990. Sylvester Carmouche was the jockey.

Yes, it was Delta Downs. He didn't cut through the grass, he simply held up and waited in the fog. He timed it wrong and set a worlds record for that distance (before being caught)

Yep that's the incident I'm talking about. Carmouche obviously didn't have the details of his plan ironed out.

No it's not trashy, but you will see people from all walks of life
This is true words right here.
You will see some degenerate gamblers. I went to the OTB in Henderson today I'd say the majority of the people in there playing the ponies were men over 50. Them suckas are at the table studying all the races, taking notes, etc.

I was told it was the old track in Lafayette, but I am surprised it was even remotely true..

Yea it's absolutely true. It's considered one of the worst cheating events in sports. His son took things to another level and got prosecuted for attempted murder and arson.

VINTON, La. — The phantom fog jockey of the Delta Downs race track, accused of hiding his horse in a fog bank and then rushing to victory, has been charged with felony theft by fraud and suspended for the rest of the track's season.
Sylvester Carmouche, 31, was taken into custody Thursday by the State Police criminal investigative division and taken to Lafayette. He was freed after posting $1,500 bond.
The case is expected to be reviewed by the State Racing Commission, which could hand down stiffer sanctions against Carmouche.
Carmouche's suspension will continue until April 1, when the track's meeting ends.
The jockey is accused of using heavy fog to hide his horse, Landing Officer, near the top of the stretch for a mile-long race Jan. 11. It is believed that the jockey remained at that point as eight other horses in the race circled the track, then joined the race as the field approached the final turn.
In one-mile races at Delta Downs, horses start out of a straightaway, pass the grandstand, circle the track once and then finish with a second pass of the grandstand.
?
Landing Officer won the race by 24 lengths but later was disqualified because stewards and track officials suspected that the horse had not run the entire race.
"It was the unanimous opinion of the stewards that jockey Sylvester Carmouche did not pass by the grandstand the first time," associate steward Frank Mancha said.
"It was pretty foggy," he said.
The victory was so suspect that neither the purse nor wagers were immediately paid out, Mancha said.
"The investigation is still going on," Delta Downs President and General Manager Lee Berwick said Thursday. "That's why we can't release the (race video) tape at this time. The State Police have it as evidence."
Carmouche attorney Kent Schaffer said the jockey will immediately appeal his suspension. Schaffer also expressed doubts about the race video.

He was banned for life but reinstated after a few years and is still riding, although not too successfully. No wins in 2018 according to equibase. I've seen the video once on TV. I've never found it online anywhere. I guess they dont want anyone getting ideas.

Both acceptable answers. Although you're running slow to the outside with the screw tops.

Of course some people at the races are trashy. They're trying to double their minimum wage paycheck. Gambling facilities always attract some trashy people.

Everything is trashy. This is OT rule #1.

Horse racing is as opposite of trashy as you can get.

This could be said about any sport except for maybe horse polo. Not many, if any, Bubbas at those events.
