Is having one white earbud dangling from your ear a recent trend?

I have noticed this a lot while walking to lunch in downtown Houston. Seems to be mostly among the millennial kids.

Is it to be ready for that very important phone call that is just around the corner? are you listening to some music? Honestly curious why it’s so prevalent.

I don't do it often, but it's to listen to music (or make a call, though that's never the case for me) while still being able to hear my surroundings. I'll do it at work sometimes. I don't think it's some hipster trend, just an awkward looking convenience.

I haven't noticed the trend but if they're walking around downtown I'm assuming it's so they can listen to music and also (somewhat) hear their surroundings.

This is not really a millennial trend. I have no issues with it. I'd rather people do that than listen to their phone ring or ding with phone calls and texts. Also better that they keep one ear open so they can hear things around them.

As many as mentioned it's for safety regarding my surroundings when I do it. If I'm in a bar or something it's usually because I'm watching multiple sporting events at once. 1 on a TV in the bar and another on my phone.

And I don't think I'm a millennial but figured I'd answer anyways.

I would much rather this than them having their music playing out of their phones speakers so that we can all know how tough they are

It’s a fricking stupid trend. We all have them and the generation before us thinks it’s stupid as shite.

I pull one earbud out when I have to talk to somebody, (barista, grocery clerk, etc) so that they know I’m listening to them and so that I don’t appear rude.

I doubt anybody you see with one earbud is thinking “let me do this because it’s a new trend”.

It’s a trend among those who want to have enough awareness of their surroundings to not get run the f$&k over.

Why would I listen to music in a coffee shop or while grocery shopping...?

I’m not sure if you’re serious.

Never been to a coffee shop and my wife does the grocery shopping. If by chance I leave the gym and the wife asks me to pick something up for dinner, I may be wearing my headphones and they don’t come off until I check out or until I need to ask where are the mother fricking tampons.

Listening to music or on a call but don't want to be completely oblivious to surroundings. I'm 42. It's not a fashion statement.

If your earphones still have wires, you're poor.
