I think if you're throwing an actual party and not just an informal get together, you don't ask people to BYOB (if you're over the age of 25). However, I also think it's rude to show up to a party without at least bringing a glass of wine or a 6-pack for the host. Unless it's a very formal party, in which case you don't BYOB.

Not at all - with beer anyway - everyone has their own preferences. I would always have a standard selection of liquor and mixed drinks at the wet bar though - it's just the polite thing to do when having guests.
ETA: Also, if your friends are worth having, they'll bring something to contribute to the festivities.

So why not drop another $30 or $40 on a little beer?
The problem is that its a slippery slope. what type of beer do you provide? Do you offer gluten free beer? What about wine? Red? White? Rose? Champagne? Do you make punch? Do you have liquor? What about mixers?
Being a host is not an obligation to provide something for every contingency. They should provide something though, and communicate it.
Also, I have been to a party where someone didn't show up with beer. I typically don't provide beer at my party b.c I know my friends will show up with it.

BMOB is the only way to ensure I will drink what I prefer...

Is it rude to have a dinner party and ask everyone to bring a dish? No. Same concept. You're supplying the important thing - the house.

Well, this can be said in respect of anything that you happen to be providing. Take a gander at the F&D board and witness the bourbon/vodka/gin discussions. I just feel that is you're going all out, one or two choices of beer isn't really too much to ask.

Yep. If you're hosting, just tell people what you will have, and if they want something else, they will bring it. Unless your guests are very rude, they will know that it's common courtesy to bring at least something for themselves. I.E. if you're planning to crush 15 bud lights at the party, you should bring some beer of your own and not just expect the host to have an unlimited supply of your beer/drink of choice.

No. I supply champagne and vodka and whiskey for my New Years party, if you want beer or something else I just ask you bring it.
I mean I'm spending hundreds on food and stuff so the least you could do is bring a six pack.
This. Hell, I prefer a BYOB party because I typically enjoy beer outside of the traditional domestics you'll see at a party.
Showing up with your own beer to a non-BYOB party is a bit awkward.

This is the correct answer.

I don't drink beer so I don't know what people like.

In College had a friend that would always show up empty handed. I would keep a six pack of Schaefer Beer and some bunk dope for him. And he was glad to have it...
I forgot the pack of Picayune cigarettes.

Well I would always make sure there is going to be beer there, but I don't think you are a shitty host if you don't provide it assuming you are providing around 4-6 drinks per person, and you tell them what will be there/not be there.
We host a few parties every year, and I always have a metric frickton of leftover beer (3 cases from our halloween party). But I will almost always go through the punch, and whiskey. Each friend group is probably different in that regard.

See, this is odd to me too. I don't drink white wine, but whenever I host, I would typically have at least a pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc available.

I would feel awkward showing up to someone's house without something. Whether that is an appetizer, a bottle of wine/whiskey, or always a friend favorite - drugs.

I prefer it that way. At least I know that I'll have something to drink. Plus I don't like showing up at a party empty-handed.
