Is having a party "BYOB" somewhat rude?

Do you believe that if you reach a certain age that having people bring their own booze seems a bit shabby? Or is it no big deal.

If it is a formal party that you are hosting then yes. If it is just a get together then no.

Several variables at play....
A - do you and your friends have money?
B - if your friends are bums and don't offer to bring food/booze to the party then you make them do it with the BYOB tag.
C - proper etiquette is to always bring some wine or food or something.

It's tacky for adults but then again so is complaining about having to spend $15 on your own booze

Costco is a great place to grab booze to use as party mixers

It's not about the money. That's irrelevant here.

After you're done with college, yes. But in college it's totally fine

That all depends, no blanket answer.

It is popular and boosts your e-cred to say BYOB is trashy.
The fact of the matter is 90% of the parties that the OT attends are BYOB.
ETA: Even if they aren't explicitly labeled BYOB, they still function that way.

Actual party? Yes
Gathering of friends in some party-like setting if most of the people get together with some regularity anyway? No
If it's in between, you can always say what you will have and invite guests to supplement with anything they want.

I got invited to a cocktail party last week that was BYOB.
It ain't a cocktail party if I have to sit there and make my own drink.
Not necessarily. If you text your bros to come watch football on a Saturday they should know to bring a 6 pack. If you're having people over to your house for a party you provide the booze.

No. I supply champagne and vodka and whiskey for my New Years party, if you want beer or something else I just ask you bring it.
I mean I'm spending hundreds on food and stuff so the least you could do is bring a six pack.

So why not drop another $30 or $40 on a little beer?

I think it depends, but imho its not a party if the host doesn't provide something.
With that said, I don't think the host is obligated to provide everything. Just let people know what you are and are not providing, so they can plan accordingly.
Also, I think its pretty rude to show up to a party without something to contribute.

I don't think I've been to a byob party since college. In matter of fact most wedding, engagement, kids/adult birthday parties the SO and I have been to in the past 3 years have been catered. Oh the life of dating a debutante.
