This is the proper etiquette:

John Attorney, Esq.
Big Firm
Address
City, State Zip

Dear Mr. Attorney (or John if you know him)

Blah blah

Yours,
Tom Counselor

Why does a physician put M.D. Behind their name on personal checks?

My personal favorite is when they put "Dr. John Smith, MD". I mean how arrogant do you have to be to put doctor in your name TWICE.

Ok. You found a bunch of ambulance chasers stuck on titles in their ads.

I'm not criticizing the black attorneys that do it. But I have not seen any of my white peers use Esq. in their Facebook name. I had multiple black classmates make that addition as soon as bar results came out.

Proving a few exceptions doesn't sink the rule.

The rule has not been proven other than some statements that only black people do this. So prove the rule.

Oh, and

It's definitely more common with black attorneys.

I got an email from a white attorney the other days which had his name: John Doe, B.A., J.D.

Not really.

I only do this when I want to make it clear the people are attorneys.

For example, on certificates of service, if the person has a law firm, I don't use it, I just put their name and the firm's name.

But if it's some small town lawyer involved, and I can't even find that they practice under Joe Smith PC or whatever, I may just put Joe Smith, Esquire
