re: Is downtown BR going back to a ghost town?

People born in Baton Rouge are fricking stupid.
I hope you aren't referring to me. I wasn't born here and didn't vote for the library tax.
The problem with Baton Rouge is that they allow the mass levying of property taxes voted in by non-property owning inner city dwellers. Hello St. George!
FWIW, the property taxes here are levied in Mills and the City Council has the option to alter the rate up AND DOWN each year as needed. What needs to happen is that the Council needs to say "you have a giant surplus so we are reducing the amount of the tax." But they have no balls and won't do that.
And that is enough Poli Board talk for this thread.

The downtown bars attracted LP and ghetto trash. LSU kids and white collar young folk don’t want to associate with that crowd.

King Bob argues that him and his friends basically play a game of speed dating downtown with the bars going to a new bar every few minutes.
Have you ever been downtown with a group of 20-something chicks? Those ADD broads would drag us up and down the street all night. This was what they used to do. They would start at Happy's, the Roux House, or Lucy's; then go to B&T's and dance for a while to the cover band. Then, when they'd get tired of that, they'd get some wine at a wine bar; then on to the "dance club" bar; then end the night at the patio of what is now Bengal Tap Room.

This was going to be my response in a nutshell.

You just named a few.
Duvics-nails your hole in the wall. Martini night
Ivars-older Fred's on the weekends, covers the central and Zachary crowd, daytime drinking if so. Wing night
Merchant-burger and beer
Bumsteers-rooftop patio drinking and burger
Digiulios-wine and Italian
Earls-newly renovated and nice
Bulldog-staple in the bar scene. Patio beers
Olive or Twist- great mixed drinks, small but great tap list, good food late and early and happy hour
New Cove on Essen- great mixed drinks and the food looks very good
Hayride Scandal-arguably best drinks in town. Good happy hour
Radio bar-idont go but it's very popular
Superior Highland-3.5 jour happy hour 7 days a week. Included because it's right by my house
So I drive past all of these places to go drink downtown or at least drive a farther distance. I have no reason to go downtown along with all the other residents in 70808 and nearby areas

Retarded enough to own multiple drinking establishments throughout the city making a ton of money in the process.

Not shocked. The place was incredibly poorly run by a cokehead idiot.
It was a great concept in a great location with almost the worst possible execution.

How much money did Chicken lose investing in them?

What was the name of the Mexican restaurant that was in that spot years ago? I used to like going there when it first opened.

I don't really think that open container was that big of a deal to the people

So you move around once an hour. The open container law shouldn't do much to your nomadic group to a point where you dont go downtown anymore
I've been going out in BR awhile. I've never heard anybody once suggest going downtown because you can walk around from bar to bar with a drink.

I was down there on the draft house patio the day they started. Police rolled in as usual but after about an hour started ticketing everyone with literally no warning.

Usually a good time when I go, plus they have a solid burger special.

Just a solid all-around place

Haven't been yet, but planning on trying it out soon.

Haven't been since they renovated, but I had some good times on the patio in law school.

Always a solid option. If you have a cute dog, pint night is a great time to meet girls.

Olive or Twist
Never been

Food is VERY good. The pastrami sandwich was awesome, but the soup it came with was mediocre. However, that sandwich will definitely have me coming back regularly.

Hayride Scandal
Never been, but will probably be a frequent stop once I can afford to drink there more regularly

I used to go all the time when I lived near there. Free food sundays were great, and I never fail to run into people I know whenever I go.

Superior Highland
Never been to that location. The one on Government is always packed with 35+ teachers and housewives, extremely loud, and extremely overpriced.

yeah, I lived in the overpass area for a year and only ventured off of Perkins when I was dragged to Happy’s. Which sucks because when Happys was too crowded the other options downtown are full of townies

How can you not afford hayride scandal? Good lord man

Damn barcadia closed? It was never busy so it makes sense but I used to like it in there
Last time I was there they switched management and I went in at like 8:30 and sat at a table after grabbing drinks at the bar (literally 4 people in the building and none at tables) and they told us we had be seated by the front.
I get the thought process if it was busy at all, but literally we are surrounded by open tables, we aren’t holding anyone up or squatting on a waitresses table or anything bc we were pretty much the only patrons
the bartender was more pissed about it than we were bc they were scaring away the only people in the building

The issue was that the anti-smoking ordinance passed, so people had to smoke outside. Most of the bars downtown don't have patios, so people would hang out on the park benches on the sidewalks along 3rd street to smoke and bring their drinks. The cops roll up and ticket everyone.
All it takes is one friend of a friend getting a ticket, and all of those bars essentially get blacklisted by every 20-something chick in a friend group. Guys tend to go where the hot 20-something white girls go, and they stopped going downtown, and the baws followed.

I haven't been at happy hour, but when they first opened, their drinks were all like +$12. I've been on a PBR budget for the past 4 years
