It's always been like this, but Chicago never used to report their numbers to FBI for grant money.

But the state is so fricking broke, that they gave in for the federal cash, to report crime numbers. They always used to point and laugh at other cities, because they hid their numbers, no more, now we all laugh at them.

Drug lords in CA,SA, and Mexico are using and abusing them. Pitting black gang vs other black gangs. Sitting back and watching them slaughter each other for their product.

The Northern suburbs (the ones you named) are mixed, though they tend to be on the liberal side of conservative or the conservative side of liberal - these are the areas that send their kids to the Ivy Leagues, Duke, Northwestern, etc. Rauner is from that area, as is Rahm Emanuel.

The Western burbs (Naperville, Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Wheaton, etc) tend to be more conservative. These families tend to send their kids to Big Ten schools.

The most liberal areas of the metro area are the super hipster parts like Wicker Park, Bucktown, Ukrainian Village, and Logan Square and some of the Hispanic neighborhoods going out to Midway (like where Chuy Garcia is from).

Memphis, always one of the most dangerous cities in America, is on pace to break its record for most murders in a year this year.

If you live in Old Town, I don't know how you haven't once felt unsafe because you don't live too far away from Division which can be a cesspit at times. Someone was shot in the middle of the street in a driveby at Clarke and Division 2 weeks ago.

The Southside is definitely one of the worst neighborhoods in America. Chicago is so big though that its overall rate is actually lower than Detroit, Nola, and St. Louis (these three cities all have one thing in common).

Its overall rate is lower than a lot of cities.

It just looks bad because the only three American cities that are near-peers in population - New York, LA, and Houston - are either way better (NYC and LA) or a fair bit better (Houston).

Chicago actually isn't even top 10 worst for large American cities LINK.

Yea, you're going to have some violence in a city with 3 million people and a metro area of 10 million. Just the way it is.

North LA is not "Louisiana" in any sense. Pick a redneck flag and fly it.

Eta: exclude NOLA. Frick that toilet bowl.

Thanks for clearing that up. But what's up with all the people breaking the law by having a gun? Can they not control their people that break this law? Shouldn't there be daily sweeps until they're all behind bars? Am I missing something here?

You won't ever see me defending Chicago's gun laws or previous attempts to curtail carrying. I will defend the city when it gets unfair knocks on stuff like this. It's a massive city with a diverse population; some parts aren't so great.

And you can have guns in Chicago. I have one, as a matter of fact.

The problem here has little to do with gun laws, either for or against. There are a million factors that play into it - historical red-lining and some pretty hardcore segregation leaving a lot of people economically and socially locked out for a long time, this being a logistics center for the North American drug trade, some very poorly thought out public housing policies from the 50's through the 90's, and on and on and on - but gun laws aren't much of a reason.

Understood, it's been a hot topic on here many times so I was just being an arse I suppose and adding to the flames. Your post did inform me of things that I wasn't aware of though, appreciate that

I have no idea why this erroneous meme continues to be perpetuated. First, the most stringent of Chicago's gun control laws were invalidated following the Supreme Court's decision in Heller. Second, the penalties for illegal possession here are less draconian than similar laws in NYC, especially for ex-felons. Third, the majority of weapons used to commit crimes in the city are obtained from sources outside city limits, namely the suburbs and that perennial abyss known as Indiana.

As for the original post, I'm writing this from Lincoln Park. I won't lose any sleep tonight. No city is entirely safe, but the bulk of the violence here occurs in isolated pockets on the south and west sides.

I've been to Chicago 3 times in the last year to visit my extended family. They live in Belmont Terrace near West Forrest Preserve Drive and Schiller Woods South. I'm guessing it's a safe area as they've been there for 35+ years.

We would drive to O'Hare or Rosemont , park, and take the blue line train into town for $2 one-way . Eat lunch, visit Millennium Park, shop downtown, walk to the Beach, do the Lincloln Park Zoo, etc... I really enjoyed my time spent in CHI and never felt scared or threatened. I never travelled alone and made sure we planned family activities during daylight hours.

And like always, the violence is confined to two separate parts of town.
