re: Is Charity Hospital simply too large for any logical, successful redevelopment?

Problem is it's full of asbestos... It's going to cost a shite ton for the abatement...
And then consider the place has been mostly empty for ages now and I'd think there will be a pretty serious mold and mildew issue to deal with also.
Throw in all the dilapidated mechanicals and the price is going through the roof.

you have to gut everything down to the raw concrete and start over. not worth it.

Sounds like someone would walk out with stage four cancer if they went in that building.

The only use for it would be to retrofit it to House all of the cities municipal agencies and the court system. But that is not politically viable because that would mean the city agencies would have to vacate their current locations. Those landlords would throw a fit politically.
Plus the Judges are already sitting on an enormous amount of unused money for their new courthouse.

The original touro building that is 150 years old is gone. Has been replaced by all the patchwork renovations. It is still on the same site though.
Not it's not, the original Touro was located in what is now the warehouse district... The original hospital, as a whole, is over 165 years old...

Intersting, I work for Touro, the original building is over 150 years old, but it's updated...
Will you make up your mind?

Charity would need to be completely cleaned down to the concrete and reconfigured...a combined residential and retail area would make the most sense to me...
the best comparasion I can make to what needs to be done is the Pentagon renovation...and Charity will be much simpler as the building is empty and you don't have to worry about doing one wedge at a time and terrorist attacks...

I understand the blocks used on the exterior are no longer available.

Let me make it easier for you...
The Original Touro was in the warehouse distric...
When they moved to the Uptown location, they built a new facility, which is still in use today..
Pic of the new location on Prytania..
Same building today..

I don't think they can because in on the National Historic register...
--------------------------------------------------
What are the restrictions, rules, regulations for historic property owners?
Under Federal Law, the listing of a property in the National Register places no restrictions on what a non-federal owner may do with their property up to and including destruction, unless the property is involved in a project that receives Federal assistance, usually funding or licensing/permitting.

City should take proposals from developers. Go with whatever would bring the most benefits to city and hand it over to them for free. Money saved on buying the site could go towards reno.

They're in the process of doing just that

SO that facility isn't on fact over 150 years old like you originally said? And it's received major updates that Charity never did? Not sure why you're getting mad at my comment about Charity being outdated and think you're making some point with Touro.

He said the original warehouse district building was that old, not the one in use today.

Regardless, Charity being outdated wasn't some ground breaking info.
