If I have the tools, I fix or install damn near everything because I can. I am totally amazed at people don’t even consider taking a look just to see what’s up.

No. It's only necessary if you want a good looking and good wife and friends that won't be relentless in giving you shite. If you are gay or have no friends it is perfect.

It seems to me that it is necessary in order for you to be an alpha male

Nope. See Tom Brady.

Generally speaking I can fumble my way through any basic task up to and including replacing bath tubs and vanities. However as our income grows we farm out more and more chores.
I figure my leisure time is worth about 3x what my salary translates to hourly. With two little kids at home time away from work that isn't spent with them needs to be spent on a boat.

I don't think that you'll find many males under 30 who fit this description.

Said by a guy who’s probably like 32 and feels so superior to someone 3 years younger.

Agree. But you have to factor in your time tho. If it takes my Saturday to fertilize, weed eat, mow, add mulch, etc; I would rather sub that work out to free up my time. That is the most valuable resource I have.

I wholeheartedly agree. My focus is on career. Time away from that is devoted to the children. I can spend all my time working on projects around the house, but that only takes time away from the wife's break from the kids, and the kids attention themselves. I'd rather be going places with the kids.

I dropped my wife’s car off yesterday and got an oil change and tire rotation. Got the yard done and had breakfast. Picked it back up. My neighbor spent that entire time doing the same to his wife’s car. So whether you’re able to do something doesn’t mean it’s the smartest way to spend your time.

I figured out how to fix everything in my teens and 20s out of necessity, now I can pay someone to do those things for me and I can concentrate on building things that interest me.

Same here.

Plus, I work a lot. So if it's going to take more than 30-45 minutes, I'd rather pay someone to do it so I can spend the time with my family.

without being super mechanically-inclined

My skills are pretty basic in that area. I mean, I can build a computer from scratch, but for plumbing and carpentry, I'm pretty much an apprentice level -at best. Mrs. Midnight is pretty handy, as that was the tradition in their family - the men go out and make the money, while the gals sit at home and treat things like walls, floors, cabinets, furniture like big craft projects.

As a kid, my father was an incorrigible shade tree mechanic - so I was the helper. We changed accessories like alternators, water pumps, things like that, but never really messed with the block or brakes. As an adult, I did collect a bunch of tools to do things like shocks/springs. With modern cars, I don't even try on the engine/transmission, though - I'm at the mercy of auto mechanics.

I can run a circular saw, miter saw, drill press - reasonably well, but I'm just not into actually building stuff with my hands.

What says the OT? Have any of you made it through life just fine without being super mechanically-inclined?

Of course, all OT’ers make six-figure salaries, so I know you probably just pay poor peasants to come handle all your home improvements and other mechanical problems.

Some men like to do these things because it's either interesting to them, or it's soothing and relaxing in a way. I don't get that experience. I go to the gym everyday and turn my body into a chiseled meat factory. That's how I get my energy out.

As an engineer I'm intelligent enough to learn how things work, diagnose problems and fix them. But my time is valuable to me. There's an opportunity cost to my laying on the ground covered in oil while messing with a car.

I wasn’t raised around mechanics, but necessity causes you to become mechanical if you’re going to get shite fixed. Like cooking, It’s not difficult to follow directions, and if you have the desire, it’s not like it’s a real daunting task. People are just lazy... plain and simple. They try to church it up and make excuses for it, but that’s the real truth of the matter.

Every man should know how to do basic things, yes. I'm certainly not mechanically inclined but in a pinch I can get things done.

Change a flat

Routine car maintenance i.e. fluid levels, check air filters, tire pressure, change wiper blades.

Unclog a toilet or sink

Fix a toilet that won't flush

Install light fixtures

Change out a door knob

Those are just a few things I can think of that you should be able to do by yourself without having to call a professional and spend a lot of money on.

At least having the general sense of being able to google tasks to see if it is worth me trying myself.

Obviously changing a tire isn’t in there. That’s something you just need to know

Pretty much this. I own two screwdrivers so if it takes more than that I'm hiring someone. My yard guy doubles as a handy man
