Is being a "workaholic" something that can be problematic to a person?

Has anyone ever been around someone that is/was a true workaholic? What are signs that it is an actual problem? Let's say this person gets to work before everyone else and leaves later than anyone else. It becomes a gradual thing, but they start sending out more and more emails well past work hours..

Even on days like.. The Friday after Thanksgiving when things are slow and will be slow for the rest of the quarter (Until the start of the new year) this person is seems to be creating work for themselves.

Is it likely they get obsessed with work or they are doing it to avoid other parts of their life?

Usually workaholics are insecure in their abilities (founded or unfounded). Overall, not good in the long term.

Being busy to be busy is not the goal (job efficiency), getting positive results for the business is (job effectiveness).

Had a boss years ago and one of his missions was to be the last out of the office. Heard him say he loved his family but his career is what he was about. Hearing him on the phone lying to his kids during late night proforma acquisition work was sick.

Let me put it this way, I’d rather somebody be a workaholic that gets their job done and increases productivity and is not a leech on the taxpayers dollar than somebody be a lazy piece of shite that half asses whatever it is that they’re doing and/or is a blood sucking leech on taxpayers dollars because they refuse to work because the gubmint subsidizes their worthless existence.

Workaholics are what make this country run, not lazy arse pieces of shite. I wish there were more of them.

Nikola Tesla was so obsessed with his work that he practiced celibacy; he thought man wasted too much of his life in the pursuit of women.

Okay.. But what if this person is on salary and doesn't get paid for extending the amount of time they work?

One can be successful without being defined strictly by their career. Its one thing to be passionate about your job, its another to spend more time than anyone else, even those in higher positions than you, at work during the week and be in the office at 4:30PM on a Sunday to the degree everyone is wondering "what the hell is he working on?" or "why the hell did he create a part of the project from scratch, for no reason when he could have just made a copy of it if he wanted his own copy of it?".
