I spent a lot of time there as a child at my grandparent's house. West End is not bad. The rest of the city is a dump. What growth there is seems to be towards Lumberton.

I’m always amused at that very nice stadium and amphitheater out in the middle of nowhere

I’d recommend Armarillo.

I lived there for a long time. It has all the negatives of Louisiana with the benefit of no state income tax. The people there are a lot more into hunting and fishing than people in the two Louisiana cities I lived in. Pretty much everyone drives a pickup and a lot of your neighbors will own boats. Youth sports are big and every time a restaurant opens it will be packed for the first month because there isn’t much else exciting going on. There isn’t much of a presence of young college aged people other than plant engineers so it is hard for the plants to retain young college graduates. I’ve always described Beaumont as a smaller version of Baton Rouge in a lot of ways. Not ascetically pleasing, lots of oil and gas industry, not much to do, university near downtown surrounded by high crime, excessive traffic for the size, etc.

shithole Louisiana.

Always, and I mean always, judge a place by its people. Louisiana all day long when it comes to people.

The towns all around, especially the industrial types, suck arse in looks and feel. Generally, the people though have a spirit and approach to life that no place touches.

I live in TX and LA, have lived / traveled all over our continent and world. Seen it with my own eyes. Heard if from the eyes of others. Yes, listen with eyeballs.

All said, I ain’t ever living in Beaumont.

Good luck.

Beaumont is EXACTLY like any bad part of Louisiana you can name. Beaumont probably peaked in the 80’s for adults. And 90’s for young adults. People are fleeing Beaumont. Beaumont people are going to Lumberton. If you have children in Beaumont and can’t afford Kelly (the private school) you are trying to move to Lumberton.

The area was a good place to raise children. I had a good childhood in Port Neches. But now? I just don’t know if it is worth it now.

True but I will add that Lumberton is an odd place. My kids went to school there. I remember walking in the high school and seeing the bulletin board announcing where every senior was going to college. It was a surprisingly small percentage with almost all that were enrolling in college choosing Lamar, SFA or McNeese. There are a lot of swingers in Lumberton oddly enough in the nicer residential neighborhoods. Everyone I knew there could name the local swingers on their street. We were definitely not the type to be interested and were never invited anyway. LOL

Brother lives there now. Second time after leaving for Montana and a job transfer. He likes it fine, but he’d rather have stayed in Montana. That wasn’t an option.

So you purposely turned around and drove back by so you could see the same kid waving it around?

This, when I came to LSU and left the campus area I felt like I hadn't left Beaumont. It was exactly the same.

Is I10 construction finally finished?

Never

I-20 and I-10 have both been "Under Construction" for 30 years at some spot

I've determined (in my head) that it must be a way to get Federal Infrastructure Money flowing to the state.
