Is banning Harry Potter from religious private schools a thing?

My friends kid was forced to change on a dress up day because he came as Harry Potter and he's sort of banned. Apparently they don't have the books in the library either. He pointed out that he saw a bunch of Elsa's from Frozen at school to the administration, so he just wanted to know which types of wizardry and black arts aren't allowed.

I think it's largely not a thing.

I had tutors when I was little for a learning disability. When they found out I had a thatry potter book , one of them freaked out and told my parents I was learning about Satan.

I'm sure it's just as prevalent as students needing safe spaces or protesting Halloween costumes. Which is to say it happens but it's just idiots.

I would immediately withdraw my kid from any school that did something this idiotic. They can't be trusted with providing a decent education if they think this work of fiction is the devil's work...

I went to an Episcopalian private school in Baton Rouge from 2nd grade on and we had Harry Potter as one of the hundreds of options on our summer reading lists in middle school.

Harry Potter is a metaphor for the fight between good and evil in the world. If anything, the book should be encouraged to be read by religious authorities to reinforce the idea that there is good in this world and there is evil in this world.

Just a shot in the dark but did y'all have "harvest festival" instead of a Halloween party?

So did I. Episcopalians are generally more lenient and common sense about things.

Other denominations not so much.

Parents usually sign documents agreeing to these types of things before then even read them.

Some ladies at trunk or treat this past year were appalled that some of the kids were dressed as Harry Potter.

Edit: It always confused me as a child

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe = cool
Harry Potter = evil
Lord of the Rings = Cool
Smurfs = evil

It's a lot safer. You can trust the christians to not put razor blades in their candy.

That, and essentially that love is what saved Harry and the world. Love is the central theme.

I have no idea if it is a thing, but it would not surprise me at all if it was. People will find something "insulting" about anything..

The mascot at my high school was/is "the green devils". There was a kid who lived a few doors down from me, whose parents (actually I think it was mostly his mom) who were big in a non denominational church so he went to a christian school. He wanted to go to HS with his friends, but his mom would not let him go to a school that had a devil as a mascot..

shite, you could make the case that Harry is a Jesus allegory. What with the performing of miracles and resurrecting from death. Did Aslan perform miracles?

St. James when I was there in 1st grade had the Halloween Carnival. I think its called Fall Carnival or something now.

Episcopal BR didn't have any Halloween festivities that I remember.
