So what’s changed? They still have a precipitous depreciation when driven off lot.

The depreciation hits the original owner when they trade in. Most of its wiped out in the profits of the used car sales dealer. How many people buy directly from someone. It's usually at a dealer. So that 30k vehicle took a 25% hit in the first year. Now its trading for 22.5. Dealer is listing for 26. A lot of people will just pay an extra 4k (especially on a note) to have an untouched hed car.

They aren’t as good of a deal used as they were 5-6 years ago.

Good vehicle though. Unless you were okay with a higher mileage example, you may want to consider a new one.

Just bought a new one a couple weeks ago, I was considering used but one a couple years old with 30 - 45k miles was only 2-3k cheaper.

Don’t know what the used Tahoe market is but a few more bucks may get you new

The used truck prices aren’t the sweet deal they were. I think the sales dropped for a couple of years during the recession in 2008-2010. It really started tightening the used truck market in 2010 or so.

I don’t think prices have come down since then.

No disagree. Buy new. People who think cars lose half their value as soon as you drive off the lot haven’t purchased a car in 15 years

This. New not be much more expensive.

ary Probably a smarter purchase than a new one.

Can you depreciate a used one (honestly do not know). If so, then I agree. If not, I think it depends on circumstances.

Go to Texasdirectauto.com for easy research. Their pricing is close to market value.

A ‘16 LT 2WD with 20-30k miles is $41k. What does a new one cost? Let’s assume it’s $48k. That’s $7k in depreciation or ~$250/month. If you can float the note on the new one, cost of ownership for the first few years seems reasonable.

Price a new audi A8 and compare that to one three years old.

Used Tahoes are overpriced.

Expeditions are better vehicles and priced better.

Just bought a CPO 2017 LT with 12k miles for $42k in Dallas.

Best deal I could find aside from some 2018 "loaner" models with +/-3,000 miles that were absolute bait postings and "were just sold the night before" between 4 lots in the Dallas area.

It's insane how much the price of a new Tahoe has gone up

Are you self-employed? If so then any vehicle over 6000 pounds is what you want to buy for the tax write-off.

Top end/flagship luxo barges will still depreciate rapidly, sure.

But the general rule to always buy a year or two used doesn't apply nearly as much as it used to for the vast majority of models on the market.

When is buying a Chevy ever a smart purchase?

1990 Silverado. Sold 12 years later at 190k miles for $2k.

2004 Avalanche. Sold 12 years later at 205k miles for $2k.

I may be more lucky than smart though.
