on top of our existing taxes
Unfortunately this is what is inevitable to happen with any revamping of the tax code. Simple things like flat tax or fair tax could essentially eliminate the need for the IRS. The government only expands it never retracts

No it wouldn't, it would just shift their objective

That's essentially the same thing as a sales tax, you just only pay on your value add. It's still a consumption tax.
Yes, I know. I had to pay it while living in Germany with a few exceptions.
My point being is that we will never get rid of the current tax system, only add to it.

And its multitudes more regressive
After that it seems progressive enough for me. The more stuff you buy, the more taxes you pay. If you don't want to pay taxes, maybe don't go buy $200 sneakers, $900 phones, or $700 purses.

There is no way most of the people that will comment in this thread know enough about taxes to intelligently debate this topic.

The current system is better than a VAT if you fix it, IMO.

The less you make the higher percentage of your income goes to taxes. That's the definition of regressive.

Horrible idea. Infinitely more regressive than the system we have now.
fair adn real tax have excemptions in there. might want to read.

That doesn't exempt him from paying income tax
you are right, but if he doesnt have any real income than not much he can pay under the current system.

'm not some bleeding heart liberal, certainly not in the tax space, but and these ultra wealthy dealing in mostly unrealized gains is very tricky.
No matter how "capitalistic" you are there's no way you can think the increasing wealth gap is good for this country if you have any sense.
well the way to fix that certainly isnt to take the money and give it to the government to waste that is for damn sure.

The current system is entirely too progressive.

This is such a dumb talking point. This is why I find this place funny. It's dangerous too, because it's true only in a sense, but then false when you start delving into things.
you can't tax unrealized gains, period. You will kill investment. it is what it is.

Try owning an interest in a limited partnership or other entity treated as a partnership, which earns profits, whereby you have a "distributive share", but you don't actually receive any distribution with respect to that distributive share. Then tell the IRS that you as an individual can't be taxed on those "unrealized gains".
Also, try owning shares of a controlled foreign corporation or a passive foreign investment company. Try to tell the IRS that they can't impose additional taxes with respect to those interests.
thats not what we were talking about here.

Or, alternatively, keep thinking that you know so much about how our tax system works and telling others they're full of shite.
i know as much as you do.
and i said you are full of shite, because you are over here acting liek you have some army of tax people working for you. sorry dont believe you.

It's just funny that you're able to so easily spot the bullshite that stems from one side (e.g., the stupid article posted by the OP), but then so blind to the bullshite from the other side.
that i can agree with. Im not blind to bullshite on both sides, promise. Thats why pretty much most of the poliboard hates me.

100% with you on this. Either exempt all food or none.

I don't, but I work with an army of them. Many of which created or litigated the policy itself

This is why taxing anyone making over $400,000 more money is stupid. The only people you will receive taxes from at a higher rate are professionals, like doctors, lawyers and engineers, and successful small business people. Meanwhile, the top 0.1% of people in this country have more wealth than the bottom 50% and are paying little or no taxes. Get fricked, government. We should be incentivizing people to make it to success as professionals and business owners. Not fricking them over while giving the richest people in the whole goddamn world loophole after loophole to get out of paying anything.
