Any of my fellow mental health misfits ever deal with this? I had a hard time with it in my 20’s when I was dealing with anxiety/panic attacks. I lost around 20 pounds in college because of the infrequency and small amounts that I’d eat. I remember one incident when it took me more than thirty minutes to eat two scrambled eggs. I had to chew them until they were practically liquid, then wash down with something to drink just to swallow each bite. Miserable. Another thing the Xanax (follow up) fixed.

Read the book Choke. It is by the same author as Fight Club.
Also, I tell my 3 year old to chew her food better, maybe try that.

This phobia sounds like something that comes from childhood trauma.

Priest or Boy Scout?

That’s it! I only had this problem because I wasn’t a grown man when I was in my 20’s. God forbid anything like this is ever visited upon any of you grown men.

I choked on execedrin (sp??) tablets one time. Scarred my esophagus(sp??) bad, real bad....I went in for colon exam, I saw they have surgery to expand your throat, like for your heart using a balloon type thing. I've had it done twice. Oh man, life changer. Also, indigestion meds too.

Oh, don't do drugs.

No, but I am terrified of my 9 month old son choking. It's to the point where I will carve and mash whatever he is eating almost to the liquid stage. I know he needs the bigger pieces to learn to self feed and all that good stuff, but it scares the hell out of me. Knowing I'm being irrational isnt much help either, but I'm making an effort. Hes doing a damn good job despite my fears though.

I have an uncle in his 70s who has struggled all his life to swallow pills. He actually chews or dissolves the ones he can and eats/drinks alot with any he can't. Taking his daily meds is a big ordeal for him.
He says he is afraid of choking to death on them. I don't know if he has ever had anyone look into the issue, though.

The amount of man meat run down OP’s windpipe has left lasting scars. Sad.

A longtime friend doesn't eat chicken with bones in it. He almost died choking on the chicken as a little boy. This is the closest I've heard to your condition.

It’s not something I suffer from anymore, nor have I for a long time. It was brought to mind by the Benzos thread a few days ago, and I wondered how many others dealt with it.

Plus, it gives the OT an opportunity to boast about being a heterosexual adult male (however insecure).
