I don't fear choking but one time I accidentally tried to swallow a full bite of a burger without chewing in a restauraunt (long story) and had to have the Heimlich Maneuver because it wouldn't come up or down.

Ever since my throat can close down with no warning in a restauraunt setting. Any other time no problem, so I know it's a psychological problem and usually order accordingly (no steak).

Had my jaw broken when I was 17 and had to be wired shut. While in the wires I had to carry some wire clippers and was was told to have liquids near by at all times, that way if I felt nauseous I could flush it down or cut myself open so I didn’t choke on my own vomit.
18 years later and I still refuse to eat anything without there being liquids in sight. If at a restaurant I run out of drink I will stop eating until the waitress brings me another drink.

That’s it! I only had this problem because I wasn’t a grown man when I was in my 20’s. God forbid anything like this is ever visited upon any of you grown men.

I have ptsd from too many accidents, racing, collisions.

If someone acts like they are going to turn in front of me... No matter how great the distance, my heart rate and blood pressure spike and I tense up.

My solution when I realize it, Look in the mirror and say, "quit being a bitch".

Has been working for over 5 years now.

Everyone has their own struggles. It's up to that person to face them.

I dated a girl that had this phobia or whatever it may be. As a kid, around 10 iirc, she choked on something while in the house alone. Ran outside to her dad who was in the garage who had to give her the Heimlich.

Ate very small bites and chewed the hell out of her food. Had to break up pills. Couldn't deep throat.

I have had this problem over the past 30 years. 100% anxiety related. Go see a mental health professional if you can afford to.

I have an irrational fear of waterbugs/roaches so I understand the frustration.

You ever get tested for achalasia?

It's no joke. You don't die from it, but if untreated, you die with it.

ETA- achalasia won't affect your breathing or make you choke. It just keeps you from swallowing properly as the lower end of your esophagus is narrowed and essentially paralyzed.

I have a hard time swallowing large pills, primarily from almost choking to death as a kid on a hard candy. I to this day still have that memory as vivid as when it happened. I don't think I've been that scared ever since.

My wife must have a fear of choking given the lack of BJ's at my house.

Lots of folks with anxiety/panic sometimes feel like they “forget” how to swallow.
