How Massachusetts with Harvard, MIT, among others is ranked 29th for higher education while Mississippi is ranked 30th just doesn't seem reasonable.

A bunch of private schools doesn't really help a resident of the state. I'd imagine their methodology is based on public universities.

The snow is very easy to deal with in Salt Lake. Much more manageable than the summer in the Deep South.

id also imagine they factor High school education in there as well. Central Mass is pretty rust belt like after the textile industry fell apart

Mississippi is a huge shite hole. I feel like that is getting lost in this discussion.

Seems like this metric would place some questionable states at the top.

Not Nebraska

When my kids are out of school in three years, I'm out of here. I hope property values haven't tanked by then. The people who are running this state are getting out of hand and will have the majority vote in everything in the near future. They will probably change the name of the state to New Africa. Good luck, I'm out.

Probably true, but still. It's not like BU, BC, UMass, etc. are bad schools.

I wonder what they're calling quality of life.

Their QoL metric is admittedly weird.

When I hear QoL, I'm thinking some mix of infrastructure, amenities, activities, along with general cleanliness, safety, kindness, etc.

And USNews thinks this:

quote:

This new ranking tracks states' air quality, pollution, voter participation, social support and more.

??

And this:

quote:

Policymakers have implemented a number of regulations over the past half-century to ensure a safe relationship between people and their environment. Under the Clean Air Act, the Environmental Protection Agency regulates air pollution. Similarly, the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act ensure that states properly dispose of pollutants at treatment plants and that public drinking water meets federal standards.

So only clean water and air?

quote:

In addition to a healthy environment, a person's quality of life is largely a result of their interactions with those around them. Studies show that when people feel socially supported, they experience greater happiness, as well as physical and mental health.

So they measure social support as a metric to Quality of Life, strange.

They're considering the actual quality of your life from environmental and community aspects.

It's different, but it helps avoid counting things twice. If you're getting high marks for your economy and opportunity, it skews traditional quality of life metrics too.

The criteria are always wonderfully convoluted and nonsensical.

Unless someone hates being around family and has no regional specific hobbies, place of residence will never be a rational decision.

They measure graduation rates, educational attainment, debt at graduation, and college cost for their higher ed statistics.

That's fair, but I'd probably call it something different.

If someone on here can make an argument that the quality of life in Mississippi is better than 44 states in this country, I would be floored

most of them aren't deep red/religious states
3 of the states are among the most religious, reddest in the country. Try again.

The top ten list is actually remarkably bipartisan. 4 red states, 4 blue states, 2 purple states

Now do a racial breakdown of the top 10 vs. the bottom 10.
