But there was no insurance money for Paul or Maggie according to testimony ?today.

Something that we don't 'get' from watching this from afar is just how far out in the boondocks this was. Lots of low lying land, the main house at least a tenth of a mile from the kennels, flat land, typical coastal land. On one site the Murdaughs were called Hillbillies. Heck, that Michigan yankee didn't know squat about the state of South Carolina, much less than about the settlement and governing of same.

Most country roads would have someone notice a strange/unknown truck or car. Where I live neighbors stop to check if out of state cars are visiting (most are welcome visitors).

And why didn't they? We know why the defendant's attnys will play the why didn't you game, but they will over look how dark the boon docks are even with a few flourescent lights. Why didn't you check the house? The house was at least a city block away. And the shooter wasn't expected to be at the house, because there wasn't a stranger's car anywhere that AM saw when he returned.

As the crow flies, a little over 350 yards.

Last item of the day from trial, evidence of roadside shooting now deemed admissible due to defense opening the door during cross.

Cousin Eddie's name was introduced by the defense
quote:

But by the afternoon, Newman reversed the decision to block testimony on the shooting and alleged suicide-for-hire plot after the defense brought up Smith’s name when asking Lead Investigator David Owen about Alex Murdaugh allegedly paying up to $50,000 a week to Smith for drugs.

In bringing Smith’s name into the trial, Newman said Smith and the alleged insurance plot became fair game.

The State and Defense are meeting together on a quick recess to discuss how to go over the Agents testimony. Trying to find a common ground on getting through this quickly. No mention of bringing Cousin Eddie in from what I can tell.

I can't conceive of an ongoing expense of 50K per week.

I doubt he's supporting an orphanage or home for unwed mothers.

Yeah that is a bit much. Did it come out from his rehab what he was on?

I will say this. After a short stint on oxycodone years ago after surgeries. I did things I would have never done and said. I got off of them as quickly as I could.

It was odd, as the pain relief is minimal, but you can still function and have no idea the affect. i e....initial surgery pain they work, but long term chronic pain-- they don't.

Thanks to you and all who update this thread.

That amounts to $2,600,000/year on ONLY drugs. I can't fathom that amount of money being spent on any recreational activity unless I'm 1% of the 1%.

Agreed - maybe there was a drug dealing component to all of this but no one has said anything about it.

Don't people buy large quantities of drugs so they can sell enough to make a profit and often skim enough off to support their own bad habits?

50K every month is straight outflow of money with ????no return on "investment"?

Best I can tell, AM was stealing client money and no clients ever complained that they didn't get their annuity checks.

I wonder if there is another level to this that we won't hear about in this trial. In order for the clients to never complain, that means that they got their money. Was AM stealing from one client in order to deposit funds in another client's account?

Was the ROI you are asking about used to "pay back" the clients he stole from?

Who knows with this guy...

Drug dealing? Gambling? Money laundering? Something was going on. Dude was not eating $50k worth of pills each month. The Satterfield boys' attorney mentioned that AM had bank accounts in the Cayman Islands. Money is definitely stashed somewhere.

Some clients did complain (the satterfields). some of the “annuities” were “structured” to where they wouldn’t begin paying out for a couple of years, so many didn’t know they had their money stolen yet. Some of the annuities seemed legitimate and would pay out a percentage of the sum per month but in reality he had stolen the rest.

He’s been doing it for over a decade. You name it, he did it. The financial crimes will be tried after the murder case and that will probably be even more intriguing.

Audio:

Kelly: “Do you owe money to any drug dealers?”
AM: “No, sir.”

Kelly: The money you paid to Smith, you were paying in full. So there is no outstanding debt.
AM: “No, sir.”

Griffin jumps in: “Ryan, that’s assuming that Curtis passed all the money along.”

They also asked if Buster was in danger, and he said 'no.'

Now he can't use the defense that drug dealers were after him or Buster in some way.

Do we know when / if the new car / OnStar data will be introduced?

And yeah, there is no way he was spending $50k / month on drugs. Cousin Eddie was doing a lot of dirty work for Alec.

t wasn’t all perfect, however. The family had a nickname for Paul: “The Little Detective,” Proctor testified. That’s because the young man would snoop around the house to make sure his father was not taking unprescribed pain pills, she testified.

Proctor testified her sister was also concerned about Murdaugh’s addiction.

Murdaugh's defense attorneys are expected to begin their presentation Friday. Attorney Dick Harpootlian previously said it would last about a week. Court will not be in session Monday due to Presidents Day.

This line of questioning for the cross examination between Harpootlian and Agent Kelly is like watching my parents argue before they got divorced. I'm so uncomfortable.
