There are US highways that parallel the interstates and the US highways have been four laned in many states. Because they go through town with slower speed limits, we seldom see big trucks on them.
Without giving up some of my regional secrets, I'd recommend US 36 or 136 in northern Missouri.

They can't even stay in the right lane when they're required to, ala the Atchafalaya basin. A better idea would be for states to stop handing out CDL's to semi retarded foreigners.

Pave the medians and make the truckers use that.

We should be shipping more by rail
Yes but things that are shipped by rail are then put on trucks to go wherever it’s going.
Some autos get delivered to Nola by rail, then they have to get to the dealerships by 18 wheeler.

I was north of Boston one time, and I was amazed what it’s like driving on an interstate with basically no 18 wheelers. It was very strange and extremely noticeable. I guess because there is no where to go other than Maine, it was one of those moments that seemed so odd as someone who drives I-12 daily.

Can it be an 18 Wheeler and Texas plate lane?

An interstate lane that runs parallel to the commuters.
Who's gonna pay for it?

18 wheeler drivers need remedial driving lessons.
I imagine a lot of them can't read or speak English.

But how will they pass another semi by going 0.000001MPH faster?
This. I consider myself pretty easy going with most situations out there but I’ll admit this one gets my goat.
The passer could momentarily speed up just a little or the “pass-ee” could momentarily slow down a tad but nah.. they’ll sit there neck and neck for a good 10-15 minutes and let the left lane get completely backed up. Then you get your whackos and borderline road ragers getting pizzed off and looking for potential right lane opportunities if a momentary opportunity slips open. Just creates a generally unsafe situation for all.
I tend to think it’s one of those little “power trips of the road” they fully enjoy sometimes….simply because they can.

It would be pretty silly to put any real money into a project like that when we're going to have flying cars so soon.

Why hasn't this happened yet? An interstate lane that runs parallel to the commuters. To get these freak shows that drive the speed limit in the left lane off the road. Either that or make it illegal for them to pass and to enforce a minimum speed on the right side. Could you imagine an interstate without trucks and truck drivers?!?!
That exists on the Garden State Parkway. There are separate lanes for trucks and buses. Cars can use them if they choose but that would be pretty stupid.

The low iq dipshits also wait until they are about to cross a bridge or go up a steep hill to get in the left lane.

it has. The primary reason the Federal Interstate system was put in place was for defense.
second primary reason was to promote economic growth and commerce.
the fact everyday citizens can use it, is just an added benefit.

Because Interstate construction sucks as is.
Well if you live in Louisiana, seeing interstate construction especially if it is a widening or overlay, that is like spotting Bigfoot.
Realistically, this would only work in non urban areas where the interstate is 3 or more lanes, and in Louisiana that would account for almost no miles of interstate except for I10 between New Orleans East and Slidell.
I am warming to the idea of “express” or managed lanes where the median is ripped out for thru only traffic lanes and you pay a toll to use the new lane or lanes. By eliminating the conflict congestion points, these lanes should be free flowing. But you have to eliminate all the left exits or entrance ramps as those are in your way or would require too many lane shifts for the mainline traffic.
For example, this would be perfect for I-10 between the Airport and the 610 split. But you have left entrance ramps at Causeway and Williams.
One big choke point on the interstate around Nola is around Williams and Power where you have 4 on ramps that have to merge onto the interstate before a 3 lane bridge with no shoulders. That bridge should have been widened years ago to accommodate 5 lanes to match the interstate on the other side. A short term minimum build idea would be to merge the Williams and old airport access ramps as one entrance ramp that merges before meeting I-10. That way you can utilize more space to merge the interstate before the merge with the Power ramp.

If that's an option, most of them seem to take it. The amount of semis on I-10 between 0400-0645 is much higher than it is during rush hour. That's when I get to watch a steady stream of people in passenger vehicles cutting off semis with way too little room.

Gordon and morris bart would never let this happen.
Side note: I do wonder what the benefit/cost would be of having to actually construct the truck lane vs how much money you would save in the long run of having to repair interstate guard rail, busted concrete on bridges, etc caused by 18 wheeler accidents… As well as the cost of having to overlay/reconstruct segments of interstate due to trucks tearing it up and rutting the pavement.
A new lane would be expensive as hell but probably way less maintenance on interstates over time. Still prob not enough to justify it.

This is miserable. If the truck in the right lane would slow down for about a 1/2 second while being passed it would help, too. I am pretty level headed when driving, but this frustrates me to no end.

Or we could make it where they have to stay off of interstates unless between 10:30 pm and 6:30 am. It would be better than such a small percentage of the traffic working so hard to inconvenience the majority.
I hated the shipping delays and empty store shelves of Covid. We would be guaranteeing those days as the norm if we cut out 2/3s of the day for shipping.
