Intel’s totally voluntary offer

quote:

According to various reports in the Irish media, thousands of workers at Intel's manufacturing plant in Leixlip, County Kildare, were offered three months' voluntary unpaid leave in a bid to lower overheads. The move follows Intel's announcement in October that it planned to lay off an unspecified number of employees worldwide, and even ditch some product lines, in response to a worsening economic situation. These plans are part of a massive reduction in spending, with Intel looking slash $3 billion annually starting next year and by between $8 billion and $10 billion by 2025.

It’s not a layoff! It’s a break!

So Intel makes computer chips that are in high demand, and they cannot figure it out? Sounds like they are purposefully tanking because woke.

Or they are looking to move their operation out of Ireland.

I’m all for shitting on companies and people for being unbearably progressive, but I don’t see the correlation here. Everybody is in a big squeeze; tech seems particularly vulnerable right now.

Intel - don't do any layoffs until the chips that will regulate my heated and cooled power seats are produced. I've been waiting almost a year . . . .

Maybe, but Apple is also in the process of kicking them to the curb in favor of homegrown ARM variants.

Apple is producing their own silicon now. It is really good. No ARM

This may have a lot more to do with sluggish western demand for high end microprocessors after the covid boom (chips for PCs, not automotive heated seat controllers or brake modules) and China being cut off as a potential end user due to the recent technology restrictions.

If you didn't already know, China has been cut off from the newest gen microprocessors and their manufacture.

Apple Silicon is really good, but it's still ARM based. (Nothing wrong with that, considering that the old Intel stuff had a lineage extending at least to the late 1970s.)

AMD has been stealing market share consistently from intel for a few years now. Lisa Su has been amazing tbh. The new stuff they are producing this year is going to widen the gap even more on the consumer side. Their server market is crushing as well as their new gpu
