This is what happens to those in your camp when you tell them you are out of coffee…

The upshot was that, in blind taste tests, your average brands … Folgers, Nescafe, Cafe Bustelo, etc, did better than the White-Chicks-in-Yoga-Pants upscale brands like Starbucks.

I haven't had instant coffee in years, but it is probably better than whatever comes out of a Keurig.

Cafe Bustelo instant coffee will have you wanting to run a marathon. Have to be careful with that stuff
Good brewed hot coffee is so much better than any instant.
However, I absolutely prefer Bustelo instant to make a quick iced coffee in the summer over all the fancy "cold brew" stuff. There's just something way too heavy and acidic about cold brew and it gets worse the more expensive the brand.

I just want to give a shout out to Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Kochere, dark roast, whole bean coffee.
I was introduced to it when I worked in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for two weeks. They served it in the Sheraton Hotel's restaurant where I stayed and I ended up buying 4, 1 kilogram bags of it to bring home with me.
You have to grind it yourself but it's worth it.

Just read this internally linked article for their instant results: LINK
Honestly, I put more stock in their results on instant coffee than the comparison article in the OP. They tested 24 instant coffees, picked the best, then tested those against a bit of a bullshite handful of drip coffees. Useful for knowing which of the instants are the best, but relatively useless in comparing the two types.

What?
I have yet to find one that is drinkable.
This. I've got to admit to only trying about 4 different name brands over the years, but even then, they all tasted like crap and don't compare to freshly brewed coffee.
To me, it's like saying canned Hormel Chili is better than a good pot of homemade. To that I say, you've got shite for taste and your opinion doesn't count.

Yep. It does bring back nostalgia. Paw paw was retired Korean War vet. He always drank instant coffee with more dry creamer than coffee...in one of those small cheap Styrofoam cups.
Eat it with burnt toast and spreadable butter. Every morning I knew him.

There have been a few studies which indicate that instant coffee may have negative health effects. Macular degeneration is one that I have seen mentioned as a negative.
I would do a quick search.

Got used to instant years ago as a young single guy. It was fast and easy to make and I didn’t need to spend money on a coffee pot. And the big point is - No Waste! Kcups, coffee filters, nespresso pods make for a bigger carbon footprint. Help save the planet!

I keep a case of white monsters on hand. Haven't had coffee in months.

Caribou Coffee's Daybreak blend destroys all competition. I drink multiple cups black every day, always pick up a few bags when i roll through the upper plains. One of the very few things that Minnesota does right.
