"Instagram influencers" are globetrekking and driving luxury hotels crazy.

Linh is part of an ever-growing class of people who have leveraged their social media clout to travel the world, frequently in luxury. While Linh and other elite influencers are usually personally invited by hotel brands, an onslaught of lesser-known wannabes has left hotels scrambling to deal with a deluge of requests for all-expense-paid vacations in exchange for some social media posts.

the "Insta" industry is retarded. I'd like t see an actual return on investment for giving an instawhore something for free, to see how many of these losers, that follow these whores, actually buy "product x" or stay at "hotel y". It just seems like throwing money away. Not complaining about the arse being instagramed, just saying the whole concept of paying these people money to flaunt their arse with your product off to the side of the picture baffles me.

I feel like this has been a marketing strategy long before instagram. Instagram just lowered the bar to entry.

We have an old college friend who is now an Instagram "influencer." Really, she's a SAHM who married a rich guy and now has nothing to do but blog about being a mom despite having an au pair at the house.

She posts frequently on her stories about being mistreated by restaurants and stores. The best one was the time she posted about 20 posts in a row lecturing restaurants about how they should not only pay for her meal as an influencer but comp two extra meals as well so she can have the experience with her friends.

I used to have an Instagram account where I would post pictures of me putting my dick in a variety of baked goods - cakes, puddings, cupcakes, pies.

I'd tag the bakery with the line "This cake was so good I had to stick my dick in it." Figured it was the kind of publicity they'd be looking for to really drive up sales and revenue.

The idea was that I would also get free cakes out of it, but all I got was banned from Instagram and a court order to never enter a bakery again.

I think these businesses are overestimating the influence of most "internet celebrities".

Even if someone has 10 million subscribers, that means there are 350,000,000 people who don't listen to this person. If someone emails you demanding a free stay in exchange for favorable reviews then post the mail online for all to see and discredit them.

Too many of these pussy execs cave in though.

I agree with your premise that influencers don’t really influence that many people. However, having subscribers and a large following is worth a shitload in advertisements. Rush Limbaugh has around 14 million listeners and signed a $400 million dollar contract. Someone with 10 million Instagram followers is easily worth a free dinner or hotel or vacation stay if they’re going to post about it.

A lot of industries are still struggling to figure out social media. I've seen it with some older folks I've worked with, who just think if we just send out spam emails or buy some ads on Facebook, we're "putting it out there" where everyone will see it!

It's tricky though, since a lot of traditional advertising doesn't seem to be working.

We own a clothing company on the side and get requests all the time from insta-whores and bloggers for free stuff. We've never used any of them. It's all about them getting free stuff and no guarantees of a good return.

Why don't businesses post a list of people that have requested this stuff? Seems that would end this practice immediately.
