Criteria for "major" being containing a professional sports franchise in either NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL.

Gotta go with San Antonio.

I'd rather spend time in SA than Charlotte or Jacksonville.

Your right hosting the NBA finals every few years gets really boring.

Not like:
Tampa Florida
Columbus Ohio
Charlotte NC
Memphis Tn
Tulsa ok
Newark NJ
Buffalo NY
Des Moines Iowa
Boise Idaho
Albuquerque NM

I know it fits the criteria in the OP but I just can't call Green Bay a major city.

Buffalo is a blast! Went there for New Years last year and watched the Buffalo Jets game and went to Niagra Falls.

great climate, cultural melting pot, on the beautiful gulf coast, 4 year university with close to 50k enrollment. Tampa isn't even in the neighborhood

Although it's been a while since I've been there, Sacramento is not particularly exciting.
