So these flying wasp/scorpion/spider beasts fly low to the ground, seem to be digging for something in the dirt, and emit a weird buzzing sound.

Roughly 2 times the length of a wasp but with same width. South LA

Whatever it is, I recommend using fire to kill it.

Pick it up and touch it on the arse and report back to the OT on the result.

Eastern cicada killer (Sphecius speciosus)?

Size from half an inch up to two inches. Black to reddish brown with light yellow striping?

The rest of your description makes no sense in relation to these two.

No they aren't, but they look a hell of a lot more lethal. As if yellow jackets aren't bad enough.

Han’gpoi Tailuun’ghila

Roughly translates into “Scorpion-Spider-Wasp”

For me personally, red paper wasp stings hurt more than yellow jacket stings. Never have had the misfortune to be stung by a cicada killer.

Still think the OP’s description makes no sense.

Taste it. If it's sour then it's probably a hornet.

The insects pictured are European Hornets I believe.

They live near me. I have seen them often.

They are not very aggressive.

No one in my family has ever been bothered by them even though they live in my front yard somewhere.

I have not seen a nest.

The colonies appear be small around 12 to 20 hornets.

Got a color for them?

Perhaps it's a blue-black spider-wasp or some sort of tarantula hawk? Or a dirt dauber (this one would go with the "scorpion" description)?

Look like any of these on this hilarious guide?
