Yea they are pretty similar.
Main difference is that in terms of space taken up yellow jackets at the bottom are actually yellow with black stripes instead of black with yellow stripes. There is just more yellow basically.
ETA: also yellow wraps all the way around on yellow jacket but not cicada killer
ETA: ETA: Someone already posted the yellow stripey things guide. I cry
Chart of yellow stripey things

Although female cicada killers can sting, they usually ignore people and are rarely aggressive, Brown said. And while the male is often territorial and may act aggressively, he doesn't have a stinger.

What did the scorpion part of your OP refer to?

Oh yeah, that’s a
Han’gpoi Tailuun’ghila for sure. Big one too.
Look out for the nest. They like to make them in the Dens of burrowing rodents. They’ll sting the occupant to death, then build the nest around the decaying body, using it as food and for building materials.

They can have an orange stripe just like that. Google it
Posted on 10/11/19 at 4:50 pm to BigEdLSU
That's a dirt dauber. They can be a wide range of brownish-orangeish-yellowish colors and randomly have lighter stripes/spots/wing tips
They're also one of the only ones that dig.

That’s a dirt dauber. They won’t sting you.

Oh shite it’s definitely a dirt dauber

Oh another note, even though their stings don’t hurt as much, frick yellow jackets. That guide is right, they just sting you for no reason.

Yellow jackets are most definitely assholes. I mowed over a nest once and got 37 stings, I still have the mental and physical scars.
It was like a movie. I took off from the backyard and ran all the way down the street in front of a garbage truck while swatting at my shorts and shirt like a madman
ETA - and screaming like a little girl

At least in that case you provoked them (and took a few down with you). Me and my friends got attacked by a gang of them while eating some food.

Funnily enough, it’s the WASPs that allowed it to happen
