One factor not mentioned yet in this discussion is the fact the victim is a student at AU and the perp is just some local thug. That’s going to weigh on the DA’s decision on how to approach prosecution of this crime. Auburn has a reputation as a “safe” college town and they are going to want to protect that reputation.
The last thing the City of Auburn wants to do is make parents think their kids, who they spend tens of thousands of dollars to send to Auburn, are not being protected. There will be a good deal of pressure from highly influential sources on the DA to make sure this thug is made into an example of what thugs can expect when they decide to viciously assault an Auburn student.

It’s even worse than that. When you break it down to the segment of that 14% that are actually committing violent crime, you find out that the actual number is less than 5% of the population are responsible for over 60% of violent crime in the US.

There is a martyrmade podcast where the narrator is reading a first hand description of a young Jewish boy from NYC in the 60’s and 70’s. The first hand account says this exact thing in much more eloquent terms, basically that the middle class whites were not tough, scared to fight, and were timid around and intimidated by the migrating black students.
But the immigrating Irish and Italians were not and their kids knew how to fight. There was very little bullying between these groups, but the soft kids were constantly picked on.
