So studies linking increases in unemployment with increases in suicides, homelessness, malnutrition, and lower life expectancy are all bunk?

Double estimates
Nah, the consensus estimate was 3.4 million initial claims.
So at 3.23 million the number came in slightly below estimates.
Consensus estimate was 1.7mm - go to link below..filter for US and today

Good news is this is likely short term for at least 2/3 of those.
What makes you so confident in this being a short term issue?
Even with the 4 month loan from the feds - once that 4 months is up, not all employees will be back at the income level to employ the numbers they previously employed.

Scruffy forgets that all of this is inevitable with or without a lockdown.
I guess if you support trickle down it makes sense for everyone to keep working sick or not then all the old people die and their money trickles to the next generation. You must be heavily invested into the funeral sector.

I do agree, we can't keep it this way much longer, people are just going to have to figure out how to live in the "new" world. People at risk are going to have to stay secluded longer and be more careful about their travels.

The US and/or State government just told America to stay at home and stop producing income. They are now incentivizing us to stay home and collect unemployment . So tens of millions will now make claims and they’d be foolish not to. So these are not going to be “ real “ unemployment numbers, these are going to be more like cash handout numbers. It’s not really accurate to see a historic State- orchestrated shutdown as anything other than an anomaly.

As I posted in my soon to be deleted repost: The largest jobless claims week during the 2007 Recession was 700,000.
And this is just getting started. Strap in boys, this is going to be B-A-D.
We desperately need antibody testing, so that those of us who have already gotten CV19 and beaten can get back to work.

And people believe we can just stay the course and shut it down for another month or two.

A lot of small business will not be able to reopen. This was their death knell.

I was telling my wife the other day that I would like to see a survey what line of work the people on social media (and even here) who are so ADAMANT that everyone must stay at home above all else are in. Obviously this is purely anecdotal, but on my social media account the ones that fall into that category are: 4 stay at home moms; 4 nurses and 2-3 teachers...the commonality being that this shut down affects them NONE relative to job security or income.
On the flip side I see my friends who are small business owners almost begging folks to continue to purchase their products/services
I can guarantee you that for every one person who is deeply concerned that them and/or their loved ones could get the virus there are 100 other people who don't care about that small risk because they are looking at the harsh reality of bringing in little to no income not just in the immediate future, but potentially for months.
We MUST find a way to balance this soon or else the "preventative measures" are going to have a FAR greater impact on society and the country at large than the virus ever would have. There are millions out here nervous, scared and hurting, with NONE of that concern being about potentially dying from the virus

Yes and the DOW has rallied 700 points for a 3rd straight day of gains. Money seems to be coming back in.
