I had one junior year; team doctor found it during the old cough test.
I was walking that night and could do anything but ride a bike two days later.

I didn’t understand the big concern. My wife was super worried so I had the surgery. Was bellied up to the bar 2 hours later, 36 holes of golf that same day.

I had one 12 years ago and it was pretty miserable. Not sure if my surgeon wasn’t good or if maybe they do it differently these days. I felt like I couldn’t stand straight up for a week and had to take pain pills.
For reference, I broke my nose a year ago and had a rhinoplasty/septoplasty in October. I took no pain pills, had minimal swelling/light pain, no bruising, and felt perfectly fine by the time I got home. I’d take that any day over my hernia experience.

Make sure you use a general surgeon that has performed these many times.
Also, make sure it is done either with da Vinci robot or laparoscopic——minimally invasive.
DO NOT GET OPEN PROCEDURE.

I had the surgery via robot (I forget what it’s called) about 3 years ago. Was supposed to be 3 small incisions but ended up with 5 as apparently the Med Student doing the surgery “missed” a few times…
I was fine 2 weeks later. Hell, 3 days after surgery my wife came home before I expected and found me in the backyard cutting the frame horns off my Jeep with a sawzall and raised all hell about me being out of bed. I maybe took the pain pills the first day but instead just ate edibles and laid in bed a few days high as a kite playing Nintendo after that. I will say, I remember the first shite I took post surgery almost made me vomit from the pain in my abdomen.
I had some post-op pain in my balls start about 6 months after surgery. It comes and goes occasionally; maybe every month I’ll have 2-3 days where I’m not necessarily in pain, it just feels like a golf ball or something is in my lower abdomen/groin. I’ll take it a little easy a few days and feel fine again.

Had laparoscopic mesh repair for mine. One hour total time for procedure. All day in the fricking hospital though. As stated, done on Friday went back to work Monday. Taking a shite was a challenge cause you can’t just get up or down like normal for a few days. Obey doctor’s orders about lifting things. I think anything heavier than a gallon of
Milk is off limits for a few weeks. You’ll need to wear Loose fitting clothes- sweats, wind pants, etc. biggest challenge for me was feeling really good after two weeks and having to avoid picking up stuff I wasn’t supposed to- cause I felt like normal.
Overall, pretty easy procedure and recovery.

Most surgical inguinal hernia repairs are done laparoscopically (a few small incisions), but some are still done 'opn' i.e. with a regular (larger) incision. Some hernias are much larger than others.
That said, even an open repair of a fairly large one is relatively routine a surgeries go. The pain is fairly manageable; they will give you narcotic pain medication, and even that won't totally eliminate the pain, but you aren't likely to be miserable. Unless you have major complications, you can be back at an office job, at least light-duty (no real lifting) three or four days after the surgery. You might not be, uh ... cleared for action for a couple of weeks.

quote:There are times when an open procedure really is the way to go. For some people, open can provide a reasonably complete, long-lasting fix where laparoscopic surgery would provide only a partial repair and/or a non-durable one. So really, what you want to do is research doctors, find one near you who does a lot of these and has a good reputation, and then follow the doctor's advice.
DO NOT GET OPEN PROCEDURE.

what is the surgery like and what am I looking at as far as downtime?
No issue. Some small scars on belly go away, nurses check out your junk and shave you.
Just don't lift shite for 6 weeks. I mean literally, nothing.

Also don’t laugh. Or cough.

Did one about 15 years ago. Surgeon told me to wait a few weeks before lifting anything heavy and Id be good.
Needed a 2nd surgery 10 years later bc I should have waited longer to jump back into shite. 2nd one was a slice n dice (vs laproscopic) due to the amt of scar tissue in the way. Still have significant pain from time to time . Was almost 5 years ago.
My advice: Take your time in recovery and dont push it

This is what I had. Had a hernia around lower left groin area.
Doc made about 1/4" incision about 6 inches left above of my navel.
He checked the other side as well just to see if any hernia was on the right side. Checked out good.
Ditto on the loose clothing and following doctors orders.
One thing to add is to eat very easily digestible food before and after the procedure because sitting on the ole porcelain throne can be hard if you are straining to go.
Pick up some laxatives just in case there are issues with pooping.

Roger on that.
