It's shite like this that causes people to move their businesses elsewhere.

Years ago this really burnt out dude used to hang out around us, he was always stoned as frick and had some of the worst ideas I've ever heard. He knew I was studying to be an engineer so one day, blitzed out of his mind, he asked me if I would help him start a utility company. I laughed a little and said maybe, until he eventually went back to trying to scrape resin into a ball.

I now realize Jif was a fricking genius.

Opened a new business office location a couple of months ago. Small single office, one worker, with two rooms and a bathroom with toilet and sink.

The first water bill arrives with a charge for water and a City Sewer bill FIVE TIMES the water bill.

I call and am informed that the City arbitrarily charges a high amount (of their choosing apparently) for the first three months until they can decide on an averaged charge based on the monthly water readings. They inform me that after three months, they decide on the average and then credit the bill back for the overages. Well...

Turns out we use so little water at this location that it doesn't cause the meter to register. So the water company sensibly establishes a "minimum monthly charge." Sounds reasonable. The response of the city run Sewer Department?

"Since we can't establish a baseline usage charge based on your minimal usage we are going to charge you our arbitrarily inflated charge indefinitely."

How does one respond to that insanity?

That's some bullshite! You should run the water for a little while a few times a day so they can establish a baseline usage, it sounds like you will have to waste water in order to pay a cheaper bill.

I dont understand this, are there different consumption baselines for residential vs. commercial?

A vacant house for rent can sit idle for months with to no water use. Ive called and after final bill of 3 months they did a readjustment and issued me a refund.

your Baton Rouge Water Bill usually includes garbage pick up as part of the sewer fee.
My water bill is usually like $10, but my sewer fee is $25 and trash pick up is another $25, hence the 5x the amount of the water bill.

Nope. Commercial businesses pay for private waste. The city isn't going to come empty dumpsters for $25 a month.

Baton Rouge Water is a privately owned company. It has nothing to do with Baton Rouge government.

Did you read the OP? This is about the sewer bill which 100% is the city. That’s the problem. The water people pretty much have their shite together.

Ran into this problem before.
Run the sink faucet alittle and flush that toilet a little more to get the bill down.

Unfortunately I don't think that ever changes. Our monthly water bill is around $15 while our sewer bill is $60 and it's always for the same amount of waste regardless.

It should be the same amount cubic feet. If its not the same amount call and have it corrected.

$15 for water and $60 for sewer for residential each month? Total bill seems high.

We have MUD districts in TX so its different.

Sure, I'm just pointing out that the water company in most of the parish is a private company. I think it'd public though in Zachary.

The water company does the billing; however, and is collecting the fees for the parish.

The problem, if you read the original post is the sewer few is tied to a high water bill

Call Foster Campbell, the public service commissioner. Set up a meeting with him/one of his staffers and tell them your complaint. I did this with cleco and cox when my mom moved recently and they were more than helpful. They actually accomplished what I was told literally couldnt be done by cleco and cox
