The civil war ended in 1865. In WWI started in 1914 and fighter planes were being used.

In WW1 more people died from getting infections after getting shot than actually died directly from engaging in war.

In 1928 penicillin was discovered.

Penicillin and antibiotics is probably the most underrated discovery ever.

Dan Carlin did a good Addendum podcast comparing imperial Germany's WW1 army vs the Nazi Germany Wehrmacht and he notes the exponential advancements in just a single decade.

Maybe even more Stark, look at the Army Napoleon rolled into Belgium with in 1815 and compare it to the one the Kaiser brought to Belgium 99 years later.

And the only reason the civil war appeared to be.. what you call "a gentleman's war" is because the most destructive weapon they had to fight with were cannons.

Could you imagine if grenades and machine guns were around. They way they went head on at each other it would have been insane.

100 years prior "Great Molasses Flood" would of broke the internet.

Jan 15, 1919 Two million gallons of molasses flood Boston Massachusetts when a storage tank burst, drowning 21 and injuring 150
