Next years crop of candidates isn't looking too promising either.

I'm Sid or Bust...literally. We got our 2ND property tax bill a couple of weeks ago. Clearly, they forgot to put the millage for removing the monument that we all voted on.

There is literally no reason they won't use to blame their self-inflicted problems on someone else. It's very much an ingrained part of their culture.

Deleting the history of the mid-19th century based on the legal, political and cultural standards of the early 21st century is so very USSR-ish.

Based on what we know today we should focus on what to do tomorrow, not what we did yesterday.

These people are morons.

Start proposing shite that would make business owners have to re-do any marketing materials, advertising, stationary, business cards, and anything else with an address on it will get those indifferent people to start caring. Not to mention confusion that new street names would cause for potential customers trying to find them.

It happened a few years ago and it was a shite show

sorry for all the quotes LINK

quote:

The proposed ordinances that were the center of the heated debate called for two things - renaming Carondelet Street between Felicity Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after Blakes, who founded New Home Ministries and died at 74 in April 2013. And renaming LaSalle Street between Earhardt Boulevard and Simon Bolivar Avenue after Raphael, the pastor of New Hope Baptist Church who died at 60 in June 2013.

quote:

Deputy Mayor Emily Arata was the final public speaker, telling the council members that Mayor Mitch Landrieu strongly supported the proposals.

quote:

Councilwoman Stacy Head said she couldn't support the proposed ordinances because they went against the guidelines governing the changing of street names - titles, abbreviations and punctuation can't be used; those being honored through the naming of streets have to be dead for at least five years; and the names of entire streets can only be changed, not just small sections.

quote:

She then said that Landrieu and those council members supporting the proposals were only doing so to keep political promises and that the "council is being pushed for a vote on an unfair and divisive street name change that breaks most of the rules."

quote:

Cantrell, whose district includes Central City, spoke next and focused her ire on Councilman Jason Williams who, she said, introduced the ordinances "behind her back." She said that by failing to consult with her, Williams set a "dangerous precedent" and corrupted the process," undermining her authority in her own district.

quote:

Cantrell said she wanted to institute a new system that creates honorary street names to memorialize important local figures while keeping the existing street names intact. She said she has been in contact with artists who agreed to design signs, murals and other artwork that would properly honor the religious leaders.

Davis today and my guess is P. G. T. Beauregard next. Robert E. Lee will be the big challenge.

No, they will only remove those for which the confederacy is their only significant accomplishment (if one chooses to call beinga confederate an accomplishment). Jefferson Davis had zero ties with La anyway.
Secession was never in the best interests of La. Kind of blocked in.

Well I was in the Army so you do get salty about many things, it's a product of the system.

But if this is the next step, are there any adequate names for these streets to be replaced with.

I remember the city council "hearing" on changing Carondelet over by the Browns Dairy. That was so brazenly illegal. But surprise surprise a majority of the city council went along with the angry mob in the room and gave them what they wanted. Somebody really should have challenged that in court. Even the most liberal judge would have had to reverse that type of blatant malfeasance by elected officials, many of whom, by the way, will be running for mayor next year.

Nah, this is New Orleans. It's going to be original so the streets will be named Mystikal Street, Juvenile Road, Cash Money Way, Back That arse Up Blvd., and so on. Remember, this is about NOLAs cultcha.

Sounds like she's copying Gulfport. They have blocks with street signs for obscure people, but the actual name of the street is still 30th Avenue or 19th Street or whatever.

And what's sad in this case with the statues, no one gave a damn and few locals probably were even aware of them beyond Lee Circle.

I have seen a black wedding party taking pictures in the middle of Lee Circle. You are absolutely right about a handful of people giving a shite about it.

The fact that as a mayor you focus your efforts on this, when your city has so many other problems is laughable.
