It's always been that way. The tradition in Korea is for the oldest son to take care of the parents. Nowadays, the oldest daughter does it as well. And it is quite normal for sons and daughters to live with parents until they get married.

This isn’t anything new - my grandparents always lived with us - my mom lived with us until about 2 years ago

I have no problem if my kids want to live at home when they are young adults as long as they are productive. We have more than enough space.

In the early days of American society (17-1800s) this was also common. Lots of my ancestors took care of one of their parents living in the same house. What do you think people did before nursing homes?

boomers paid off homes

True.
But, most don't have shite besides home.
Median boomer has like $250k or so in retirement account.
That's not gonna go far.
At 4% withdrawal, it's only $10k.
Gonna be hard for most to keep homes.

This

We dump our old people in nursing homes and visit them a couple times a month

Whitey don't want no old people in the house:
Whites account for 79% of all nursing home residents, Blacks 15%, Hispanics 6%.

Well considering blacks are 12% of population they are overrepresented.

Only way to afford it given wages vs housing prices.

Money has to be a big issue but I think there is also less social stigma involved. Grandparents help parents take care of kids, then all three generations get a little older and kids help parents take care of grandparents. And you don't have to trust your loved ones to someone who may either be the most amazing caring home care professional in the world, or someone that will rob them blind, who knows.

Over 3 generations in some homes in NOLA, if you count the ones in the freezer so they can keep getting their checks

I'm sure you wanted to make more of a comment on current conditions here in the USA, but cultures in Asia are very different compared to majority here

But in general, Asian culture are more group collective than individualistic. Look at Asians going out eat. Usually a bunch of items ordered and everyone shares them vs Americans ordering and eating their own items.

As annoying as my mother in law can be. It makes more sense for these older women to be helping with their grandchildren inside and the grandfathers to be helping with them outside.

The best memories of my life were spent under my grandfather's wing, growing up learning important life skills I carried into adulthood.

Dad worked too damn much, always seemed worn out stressed when he was home. Grandad literally all the time in the world, never got in a hurry never got stressed out.

It is common everywhere but the US.

We brainwash our 18 year olds into spending their money on more cable, electricity, rent, etc.

I've dined at a lot of high-end Asian restaurants; most have a rotating center console in the middle of a large round table where food is placed and shared.
