re: Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster On MAX

As they first analyzed the pieces of wreckage, they realized the force of the implosion fused human remains with the various sub materials. Like pieces of tissue, metal, fibers, etc.
As much as I’d like to say I understand the pressure involved at that depth, when humans are being turned into mush and fused with metal it’s clear that I didn’t fully appreciate that environment.

Agree
Moral of the story - never back yourself in a corner when lives are at stake.

I watched it.... Narcissism and financial obligations drove him to ignore all signs.

I've seen multiple interviews where it seems like every time it went down, someone was hearing a pop.
The fact he said he put ear plugs because it got so loud is pretty fricking telling.
I didn't realize it had two different hulls, and one was already replaced for cracking. The first one was about to implode around dive 50, after only two really deep dives.
The second one imploded at what, dive 82 (which was technically dive ~32 with the new hull) . And only deep dive 13.
Basically, the thing had a deep dive expectancy of about 2-10. Really zero, it was immediately compromised after one deep dive and was a ticking time bomb on every deep descent.
I don't know if it was ego, money, or if he was just in denial. But frick that guy.

Now imagine 12,000 of them stacked up.

I think I saw a clip where the main hatch was only sealed by 4 bolts by design? The ppl who went on that thing are dumb for not seeing the signs
It had like 18 or something, but they would only bolt 4 cause the pressure would seal it once they were under, and I guess they were lazy and wanted to save time. But on one descent the fricking end came off as they were about to go in cause the 4 bolts sheared off.
You were bolted into the thing. Getting out without outside assistance was impossible.

The pressure by itself didn't do the mushing or fusing. It was the force and instantaneous nature of the implosion. For an example, 1.0 cubic meter of air at the sea surface would be compressed to about 0.0025 cubic meters at a depth of 4000m. With an implosion that volume change happens very very fast, and it oscillates through explosion/implosion cycles.

multiple trips down and back is kind of remarkable
That's an excellent point. Maybe a mixed material like carbon or another fiber counter woven through hexagonal glass microbubbles in an elastic matrix could be used to make a reliable crush-resistant sphere or cylinder. I suspect there would be a few potential users for such a non-metallic envelop.

The set of nuts on that older gentlemen who was like “yeah I knew the risk. I went down again anyways”
Haha. Some people are just built different. That’s just stone cold.

My favorite part was in the first quarter of the show.
The guy asks Stockton how long it’s takes them to unbolt the sub to get out and Stockton had no earthly idea. Lol.

I wonder if they knew this was a one way ticket to the titanic.

It's really difficult to see how people trusted the guy and his sub. Paid him serious bucks as well.
Part of it was getting P.H. Nargeleot involved. He was probably so blinded about getting back to the Titanic he overlooked a lot of the flaws/issues. Many of the other "mission specialists" saw he was involved and let their guard down on things that should have raised questions.
Another example of when "trust the experts" hasn't worked out.

Trust fund baby trying to prove himself with money invested by his rich peers.
After watching the documentary, one could argue he would prefer dying rather than facing folks as a failure. There was no way he was getting a return on the money he burned through and no sane person would continue to dive with the very well known issues.
Maybe I just can't conceive the level of ego he had but hate he took innocent people with him - especially the kid.

Cameron brought that up, they had successful dives and thought they were good. But that hull was breaking down every time they went down because it's simply not made to handle that amount of pressure. It was when, not if.
