Railroad employees don't pay social security taxes.
They have Railroad Retirement Benefits which are quite similar.

Many teachers around the country also pay SS in addition to their retirement programs.

The Privacy Act
This act applies to all government agencies. It's a restriction on the agencies themselves so I would imagine anyone that walks into one of these agencies are covered.

Automatic withdraw for both this and income tax should go away.
It does if you make enough money. At some point in the year you will see a "raise" in your take home pay.
In 2024, once you break 168k in earnings, the Social Security tax stops. You've hit your limit for the year.

OP, tell us how much you’re paying your lawyer.
Well... it starts with a retainer. That was few thousand but I'm not sure where it goes from there.
This is a relatively simple legal action, so to speak. Well, I assume it is. I'm reasonably confident I'm going to win so it's not that big a deal.

I think the folks that seem irrationally mad about this are hilarious.
Consider this, we didn't fill out the paperwork at the hospital because I didn't see a need. My kid is a baby, why sign him up for this government retirement program. As time went on, I never did.
I'm at like iteration 7 or 8 of "you absolutey can't do that without a social security number". Every single person, agency or otherwise has been incorrect including the folks that worked at the passport office. They've all been wrong. Every single one of them.
Now, the DMV is wrong to but they are a little bit more stubborn than most. That is completly OK. Based on communications I've had with them, I'm pretty sure they know they are going to lose this one. They've just never had anyone take anything this far, ever.
Several places throughout federal law require you to provide a phone number. It's written in the law. Despite that clear directive, does anyone here think you HAVE to have a phone number?
Maybe at the end of the day the social security number is the same way. It's been that way at every situation I've looked at so far.
Maybe we win, maybe we lose. Is the cost of this going to bother me? Not at all.
This is just an exercise in being a active citizen. I've tried every other pathway to get some kind of recourse and was effectively ignored.
So here we are....

Wow you are a Patriot! I hope they give you a medal. That would close the loop on the attention you seek.

I hope you are not paying your lawyer by the hour.
From your lawyer’s standpoint, I hope he or she is not working on a contingency fee basis.

Wrong! Military pay FICA (including medicare and SS). The housing and food allowance portions of pay arent taxed but those also dont count towards our retirement either.

I concur. This particular instance doesn’t really affect any of us here directly and there seems to be a lot of posters trying to change your mind.
I’m interested to see how this plays out for you and wish you luck.

This. And when he gets smacked down... which he will... we'll never know about it because he won't post about it.

Of course I would update this. Go back and look at the link in the first post. I'm pretty good about the follow through.
That said, I'm really interested in the absolute certainty by the folks here that I'm not going to be successful.
I thought folks may find this interesting so I posted it. I'm not really seeking attention I just thought folks might enjoy it like the motorcycle thread.
I wasn't really prepared for the hate, to be honest. It seems a bit irrational, but whatever.
I'm a private citizen spending my own money to push back against a bit of overreach and bureaucracy. No one is being hurt or effected whatsoever.
But please, keep it up. If I win, you can all be mad because your tax dollars paid my legal expenses.

Yes Flappy. You create a federal tax if for your llc....

I didn’t have a SS# until maybe 19. LSU finally relented through the registration process and assigned me a 999 number that they used on foreigners. Did the whole LSU thing with that #.

How do you define success? Even if you win the case you lose time and $ and accomplish nothing. In fact, you drain more state govt resources meanwhile sending extra tax $ the federal govt to spend inefficiently. Also, your fellow citizens get delayed every time you waste DMV clerks' time w this nonsense.
You're getting a lot of push back on the validity and utility of your quixotic endeavor but very little "hate." You weren't expecting reasonable feedback?
