Corporate jobs erode culture, we don't want them

well there is a bubble for sure and that will pop, but the expansions are still going to leave a TON of well paying operator jobs
Takes a lot more people to build a plant than to run one. And once those people leave, real estate gets cheap and bad things spread. I know the cost of a trailer spot is stupid expensive right now.
Not trying to be a dick, just give sound advice on the internet. Good call waiting five years on the house. You're one of the good ones sfp

We prefer to mock folks with GEDs as we languish away in our middling jobs in purgatorial mediocrity in Tier 3 cities.

it's going to be REALLY interesting
rent is a major issue right now. i may do some research on it. i imagine rent is NOT a major issue say, in Iowa
the demographics are going to shift due to the COL issues and THAT is going to be interesting

Both the brunch and festivals in Nola are better than in most places, certainly much better than in places of comparable size

Houston balances corporate jobs and culture perfectly
Where else can you drive 30 minutes to grab a beer, drive another 30 minutes to grab some Vietnamese food, and drive another 30 minutes to go hang out in a field at George Bush park

quote:You know what's funny about that... people from New Orleans were saying the same thing 40 years ago.
Corporate jobs erode culture, we don't want them
Here is a snippet from an article about New Orleans written in 1978:
quote:New Orleans has been dealing with the same crap for years. And their attitude of industry destroying culture seemed to be a concern even 40 years ago.
For many who love New Orleans, the changes that accompany commercial growth inspire fear—but in the meantime the city's economy stagnates and its population declines
New Orleans had lost its industrial base. Manufacturing jobs were declining year by year, with the slack taken up by lower-paying, less stable jobs in service industries, mainly tourism. The steady fall of the economy had taken place with the acquiescence, if not the blessing, of the city's political and business leaders, who tended to like things the way they were and who probably feared the kind of social change that more industry would bring.
And they wonder why the city has been stagnant for so long...
Also:
quote:People have been leaving the city for greener pastures 40 years ago.
Many of the people who leave New Orleans are moving not to the comfortable suburb of Metairie but to the more fertile employment territories of Houston, Dallas, and New York. New Orleans is thereby losing some of its best and brightest. A few years ago, a TV commercial for a local bank featured a young black man who had graduated at the top of his class at Xavier University. The commercial told how the bank had financed the young man's education and how he was now a great addition to the community, working for a leading engineering firm. What the ad didn't say was that the leading engineering firm is in Atlanta. Similarly, top graduates of Tulane Law School regularly go to work in New York.

Say bro, don't knock Iowa. Lots of corn and fat white women.
But I'd imagine you can go where you like (since you have a shameless profession), it's gonna be interesting to see what happens to the small business owners or landlords who aren't anticipating what's gonna happen. I like lake chuck and wish them the best, but I'm pretty pessimistic about its future.

Alexandria is better than Lake Charles based on he fact that it doesn't smell like a fart when yoy drive through it
I'd consider living in one of those towns if I was an ambulance chaser , alas I actually make a respectable living

Either is great if you want to throw shade at other cities while not wanting to enter your own in the competition.
I like Ellick, I choose it as the place to go if the apocalypse came. Everything happens 10 years later there.
