The Port of Corpus Christi alone probably outranks anything in New Orleans in terms of growth. And don't try to include Mississippi River ports between BR and NO. Throw in the fact that a new billion dollar bridge is going up to allow larger ships in, and you have even more.
My hometown isn't great, but it's growing every year. I'll also be willing to bet that the amount of crimes committed is lower, as well as housing projects.
I'm not gonna compare anything here to Bourbon Street or the food, history, architect, etc of NO. But I'll be happy with visiting...I can make a living, be a homeowner a block from the ocean, and enjoy a mediocre coastline within walking distance where I live now...and not get shot. Plus, I like tacos...

It's comical that someone from New Orleans would shite in Houston. I can't stand Houston. It's too big for my taste.
I feel the same way about Houston. Comparing Nola and BR to Houston is also ridiculous. We might as well debate Chicago and Birmingham, AL. One is a top 5 market, the other a midsized city.

Right. The 4th largest city in the US has a rodeo, BBQ and Mexicans. Brilliant stuff.
And 3 major sports franchises, a major public university, a major private university, great suburban area schools, a booming oil and natural gas industry, best cancer hospital in the US...
It's pathetic I'm forced to defend the place

Saturday night, we met up with another couple and decided to give Dave and Buster's a try.
Dave and Buster's was in the news last week because a guy was thought to have knocked out a lady and kidnapped her after they had an argument and she left Dave and Buster's. She turned out to be safe and the charge was changed to a domestic abuse/battery charge on the guy. That shows you what you're dealing with as far as patrons go.

This isn't a black thing, this is a NOLA black thing.
Google "loud+black+movies" and you'll see that it certainly isn't just a NOLA black thing. It's just that NOLA is one of gold standards for poor/irritating behavior.

I don't live in NOLA or Houston. Have been to both
I got married in NOLA, stayed with friends in Houston at different times. Visited NOLA more often on my own dime
Not sure what it is, but NOLA just has it's own beat. It's almost palpable. It's energy that you feel and enjoy. Not just Bourbon. Like no other city I've been to
I know tl;dr. I was in an elevator with a couple a few years ago from Cali going to Miami. He said they had planned on spending 1 night in NOLA and had been there 4. Just how it is. Hard to explain. Going back in September for a Saints game. Not scared
Hope to retire there

shite Houston has one of the largest, if not THE largest, museum districts in the entire US

Houston is just a speed bump on the way to Austin. There are no noteworthy "fine dining" establishments worth stopping for that Austin can't provide (and exceed). Texas prides itself on BBQ, and not a single good BBQ place in Houston.
The only reason people live in Houston is for the jobs. As far as major cities go, it is the ugliest in America. Flat, industrial, hot, and swampy with zero aesthetic redeeming factors. I would be embarrassed to bring anyone there from outside the United States. Their biggest event of the year is a rodeo! A fricking rodeo!!

quote:This is a true statement. In my lifetime, New Orleans went from being a three-legged strong economy built on the vibrant port, tourism/service, and oil to being a one-legged economy when oil fled to a more business friendly Houston and big corporations chose Atlanta, and the Port began to decline when Houston, Gulfport and Mobile got a bigger share. Too much red tape corruption and backwards business environment. Weak education = unskilled labor force. Culture govt. took over, and then came Betsy and then Camille and then Katrina. All circa late 60s and 70s onward.
This notion that the economy has always been dependent on tourism is false.

But if you lived there your whole life, you may have a different opinion.
It's like visiting Jamaica or Mexico. It can be awesome if you stick to the beaches and nice areas for a vacation but that's way different from living in Kingston.

somebody said i was throwing up the dirty 3rd b/c i'm from LC but that's just b/c the discussion was Nola v. Houston
i am a much bigger cheerleader of the SA/ATX metroplex that is developing. there is NO argument about either option being superior to Nola (which i briefly touched on in this thread)

I'll say it again, Houston has EVERYTHING anyone could ever want.
Also if someone doesn't understand what I'm saying when I mention the pulse or vibe or soul of a city then I don't know what to say.

esoteric terms can have meaning
if it's your ONLY real argument, and you still can't define them, then it's simply not a strong argument
and i'm an outsider. i'm not living in Nola or Houston anytime soon. if i leave the "last hope" of LA, it will be to go to a real emerging area with real opportunity

quote:You don't know what to say because you don't know what to say. Those are nonsense words that can't easily be defined or measured which is why you like them to defend New Orleans. "Well, yeah, Houston has this, this, and this... but New Orleans has "soul" and a "vibe" so therefore it's better."
Also if someone doesn't understand what I'm saying when I mention the pulse or vibe or soul of a city then I don't know what to say.
Explain specifically what you mean when you say soul and vibe.
