I just checked YouTube. So far the Gillette commercial has 11 million views. As a result of those views there’s been just over 900,000 votes, thumbs up or down, on the commercial. Right now the up votes sits at 264,000 and down votes sits at 644,000. From a business standpoint, that’s a disaster. That says that for every one person who likes the commercial, there’s almost three who hate it.
ETA: in the minute or so it took me to post this the down votes went from 643,000 to 644,000. The up votes did not move.

I think shareholders understand the effect on the bottom line is usually minimal at best.

A commercial that’s ineffective one way or the other is not good. But a commercial that is effective at insulting and alienating your largest customer base is a disaster.
