Google is your friend. Literally thousands of fires at gas stations for one reason or another. Gas fumes and extremely high temperature exhaust are not a good combination.

Ever watch NASCAR? When an engine lets go at 150+ mph, the oil in the crankcase gets atomized and blown back on the headers and exhaust. Fire is the most often result.

Static electricity has caused fires without spillage, because of the proximity of the spark to the gas fumes.

I just think running your car while fueling is lazy, and asking for trouble.

I don't ever turn my engine off. I used to. I just don't anymore. I'm still alive.

The problem with running your car while fueling is that you're more inclined to get back into the vehicle during the refueling. That greatly enhances the static electricity risk. The direct risk from the car running is basically nil.

Yeah, static electricity is a real concern.
Buddy's car caught fire this way at the pump. Cold day and he sat inside the car while it was pumping. When he opened his door to get back out there was a huge fire ball. He was able to get away with just burnt shoe strings (and a totaled car).

Airplane mode for me is a few kingpins and beer.

Texting at the pump is 100 times worse than leaving your car on while pumping gas.

Nope.

Except at Costco. They are serious about you turning the car off.

I told that militant black guy there to eat a dick.

If you have an exhaust leak, it won't take as much gas fumes for a fire/gas bomb.

So to be really safe, we should turn off the ignition and coast in for the last 50 feet?

Looking for more info on this. No luck with Google of my car's owners manual. You have a link to this?

Combustion is happening 700 or 800 times per minute, per cylinder in your engine. The exhaust gasses are coming out of the engine at temperatures which would easily ignite gas fumes, if they are present in sufficient amounts. If you have an exhaust leak, it won't take as much gas fumes for a fire/gas bomb.

The ignition temperature of gasoline is 495° F. The tailpipe and exhaust coming from it are going to be significantly less than that. The hottest point in the exhaust is at the catalytic converter, which is actually hotter than the exhaust manifold in many vehicles. Temps quickly dissipate from that point on. Even right after the catalytic converter, exhaust fume would cool quickly if there was a leak and pose almost 0 issues. Hot surfaces would be the main concern

You are correct that spilling in the wrong place can cause issues but it is not very likely to happen. Helicopter almost always refuel with the engine running. They are way more concerned with static than any other factor.

That's really just a Hollywood thing. You may see a flash fire but an explosion is doubtful.

With all the safety precautions of NASCAR, and the high flamibility of their gas, wouldn't you expect them to have the same requirements of this were a real safety hazard?

Nascar doesn't have catalytic converters that can get to 1500F, especially at idle if the vehicle is not running properly. So it's definitely more dangerous than a race car especially if you spill gas under the vehicle at idle.

Sam's will make you cut the engine off when pumping at their stations, but will not make you put out a cigarette. Which is postentially worse?

INCORRECT.

sams policy is if someone refuses to put out a cigarette after being asked, the red button is hit and stops all pumps.

seen this in action. other people getting gas were PISSED.

When she was finished, she got in the car and took off. She had pumped her gas with the engine running, which wasn't evident the entire time because of the music. I have always been told this was extremely unsafe so this unnerved me a little.

Meh, I do it all the time. Too hot to turn off my AC.

You think the cats are cooling any significant amount in the less than 2 minutes your car is off while pumping gas?
