When she was finished, she got in the car and took off. She had pumped her gas with the engine running, which wasn't evident the entire time because of the music. I have always been told this was extremely unsafe so this unnerved me a little. Am I wrong?
Not sure, but blaring the music for everyone to hear is trashy as frick.
It's an epidemic in Baton Rouge.

Why take the chance? You can go without AC for 3 minutes.
God forbid the interior of your car get slightly warm.

It is considered unsafe, but it seems to be only a problem with old cars. Like over 2 decades old at least.
I never leave it running though, just to be on the safe side.

I used to own a Ford F250 gasser.
I theorized that if I pumped gasoline while the engine was running, I could end up in a situation where I would be at the gas pump in perpetuity.

If you're pumping gas in BR, you better turn your vehicle off or them hoodrats will drive off with it.

but I consider it pretty damn rude to run your car where people congregate. No one wants to inhale your car's exhaust.
Car exhaust fumes at a gas station are the least of your concerns.

It's one of those Darwin award/self-correcting error type things. Probably will be fine, until someone spills a good amount of gas. Combustion is happening 700 or 800 times per minute, per cylinder in your engine. The exhaust gasses are coming out of the engine at temperatures which would easily ignite gas fumes, if they are present in sufficient amounts. If you have an exhaust leak, it won't take as much gas fumes for a fire/gas bomb.
Hopefully an innocent bystander doesn't get blown up when you make your mistake.

One gas station I went to, I noticed they didn't even have "turn off engine" stickers but had no cell phones or smoking.

I always leave my truck running. If it burns, it burns.

So should we push the car up to the pump to avoid driving over this spilled gasoline?

It's August in Louisiana. That's why I take the chance. And since when did we start responding to every tiny risk by saying "why take the chance"? Life is full of risks. You can't get out of the bed without taking a risk. Man up and leave the AC on!!!!

Yes. The fear isn't the car running it us static electricity.
Use the grounding pad on your door handle before touching the gas handle. It will seriously cut down on the chance of static electricity. Your gas is going into a tank, not the engine well.
I would really like an explanation from whoever said NASCAR fuel is more flammable.

Yeah, static electricity is a real concern.
Posted on 8/14/17 at 9:30 am to slackster
Most people don't realize, but most cars have an exposed screw on the door. Possibly in a door grab or the opening handle is metal. As long as you hold that when putting your feet on the ground you will discharge all the static electricity.
Great thing to know in cold dry weather.

Can you find any stories where this is happened?

Sounds like maybe you should just go ahead and ride a bike.
